Pretzel Jar FC Questions * 1
    #14691505 - 06/29/11 12:39 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I wasn't going to post this, but last week I got my first flush off a very small 2 cake grow, all of which weighed about 4 grams dry.  I was happy with the results, but now I'm having a really difficult time getting a 2nd flush in order.  I redunked for 15 hours, and a few days later there were noticeably more pins than I had in the first flush, yet the mushrooms seem to want to open their veils early.

I think I may have been misting too much.  The weird thing is the cakes still seemed rather dry, so I dunked them again for another 15 hours about 5 days later.  I found a hygrometer (not sure if it's calibrated properly), but I can't seem to get the humidity above 80%.  I think this may be my problem since all the biggest mush  in the 1st flush popped out near the bottom where there is the highest humidity.

As of yesterday, I added 2 more inches of perlite and made a lot more holes in the bottom.  Humidity is still 80%.  I've been giving them mist 3 times  a day and fanning 5+ times.  Now I'm thinking maybe it's my ghetto pretzel jar FC that's not inducing the proper conditions.  Maybe someone could give me some recommendations?  I might just shell out the cash for a proper SGFC, but I really like my cute little DIY setup.

Any comments are greatly appreciated!

Also, what kind of hygrometer are you using? I've seen it mentioned that some of the cheaper ones, especially those designed for cigar humidors, will not read higher than 80% even if the RH is significantly higher.

In practice, there is.

Usually fresh air is a problem. Remember 2nd flush is usually half of the first so you should only expect 2 grams.

Thanks for clearing that up.  I was under the impression my 2nd flush would be a bit more prolific, no worries though.

Also, do you mean too much fresh air is a problem, or too little?

I appreciate your responses a lot!

Too little fresh air is always a problem. Can never have to much, as long as nothing is drying out. Doesnt look dry. Maybe crack the cap off a little? But yeah, dont expect to much even if all goes right if all you got was 4 grams off the first flush.

here's a pic of the pins coming along now.

I'm really not sure how much bigger they'll get though since my last ones were pretty decent in size.  I've made about a dozen more holes and got a humidifier going in the room now.

Here's to hoping for a bit more growth!  :backflip:

Do you have holes on every side, like a mini SGFC?

yeah, the chamber has 1/4 inch holes all around, bottom and top too.  They're all separated by about 2 inches.

Those huge pretzle jars are my favorite fc's u can get some monsters from that thing. If it were mine I only put holes in the lid so the humidity climbs all the way to the top,(cause the shrooms need humidity and making it all humid causes them to reach for the sky) like u mentioned the biggest ones are near the bottom where the high humidity is. When I use those the shrooms get so big they fall over. Im gonna get called out for this but I would cover the holes on the side(by the way those holes are huge and letting out too much humidity) and replace with smaller holes in the lid. And all that perlite is prob a bit excessive, and all the room it takes up is gonna cut the height of the shrooms short. And it kinda looks like u need more light from above from the way their growing.

I really appreciate your input on this since you've used them before.  I think you might be right about covering some holes, but I think I've gone a little far to do anything about it now.  I'll need to eat another tub. lol

As far as light goes, I've been giving them indirect sunlight.  I'll move them closer to the window.

I've always read that holes in the bottom are important, keeping it raised as well so fresh air can move up through the perlite.  Should I just tape up all the holes on the sides then?

If you are doing cakes again, why not head over to home depot and get a nice sized plastic bin for 5$? then you can make a SHFC. You'll be sure to have some nice fruits. Unless you just don't have the room

I'm down with the smaller holes also. 1/4 " holes were meant for the bigger SGFCs. Since you've got a much smaller container- go for much smaller holes.
I kinda dig your "ghetto FC", real cute!

Thanks a lot for the help and kind words everyone!  I've taped up the majority of the holes to get the humidity up as high as possible.  I kept the holes on the top and bottom open.

I probably will end up getting a tub, I just wanted to experiment with this since I was just going to throw it out anyway.

Yea, those do make good tubs.

I don't know if it's just for the picture though, but the bottom of your tub is pressed against the floor. U should elevate it to encourage airflow.

yeah, I've got it raised on three mason jars.  Plenty of holes on the bottom still.

I woke up this morning and the little babies seem to be doing better.

BUNK!

Dont cover up any holes. The only time you should ever cover holes is if its drying out. You can NOT have to much fresh air, as long as its humid enough. From your pictures everything is looking good.

"If it were mine I only put holes in the lid so the humidity climbs all the way to the top,(cause the shrooms need humidity and making it all humid causes them to reach for the sky) like u mentioned the biggest ones are near the bottom where the high humidity is."

That whole statment is just so wrong. Humidity wont "climb to the top" if thats where the holes are. Holes DRY out air, it doesnt humidify it. It would only make it more humid at the bottom of the tub if you cover up the holes. Humidity doesnt cause them to reach for the sky, that doesnt even make sense. They grow up towards light and away from gravities pull. More light would be good, not direct sunlight, but fluorescent or more indirect sunlight for sure.

I've grown in many containers, including this one, albiet with bulk substrates.
