Can someone clear me up on casings?
    #14690514 - 06/29/11 07:39 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

So i inoculate my cakes, put them in incubation, and once fully colonized i break them up and make my casing like so: http://www.shroomery.org/50/Casing-101 (if there is a better way to go about this for a newb please let me know)

After i make my casing with the substrate and crumbled cake i should put saran wrap, or foil over the casing and let this incubation/let colonize until i see some mycelium come through the top.

Then after that is what i am not clear about. Can i just put this in my SGFC?

From what i have read you are not supposed to mist a casing directly because it can cause the casing to not pin and fully colonize. So mist upwards and let it gently fall onto the casing, and/or mist the perlit.

Please correct me, or set me in the right track. thank you guys again for all the help!

The whole point of the casing is hydration, so no u don't have to be delicate about it. Let it dry out a bit, moisten it, repeat.

I assume the substrate was fully colonized when u cased it? There's no need to cover it with saran or foil. Just keep it as close to 85% humidity as you can and wait.

The older teks encouraged one to wait for the casing to colonize more. Nowadays conventional wisdom is to just put into fruiting conditions after you case it and wait.

edit..I might be misunderstanding you. The term casing refers to the top layer that is applied after the substrate has colonized. If you are calling the substrate itself the casing, then my bad. If that's the case, let that re-knit together before you apply the actual casing.

This site is terrible about terminology. A casing refers to just the non-nutritive layer applied to the top of an already colonized substrate.

Yup, you can do it that way.

You can pop the big "cake" out of it's tray and place it in your chamber.

Cakes do better as cakes in my opinion. Use WBS or rye to make trays and/or monotubs.

So is there really any point to casing with BRF cakes?
The only thing stopping me from grains is that I don't have a PC

Not at this point no. Unless perhaps you lived in the desert with ambient humidity in the zero to 20 range.

No, if you have BRF cakes oringinally intended to be cakes then spawn them as cakes, it will not make a big difference if you crumble it and its not worth the contam risk IMO
