Hey guys! I was helping my gf move last month and in a pile of stuff I see an ipad. She tells me that a year ago she was on a plane and this older dude just gave it to her. Weird story, maybe true, idk. But she says I can play with it if I want, so I bought a charger and charged it up. Just turned it on, and it was definitely someones at one time - pictures of a baby and some tweens, 2,ooo songs on the drive, a few movies, and of course some private email type info. First of all, as I'm firing this up, is there a gps/homing device thing that's alerting the previous owner? And secondly, how should I erase this information while still retaining the 98 apps and few decent movies? Third, what can I do with this thing? It feels like the freakin' future when I hold it in my hands, but Tetris on and ipad is still and ipad... Just to summarize: 64 GB ipad that had not been turned on for over a year with someone else's info on it... What would you do?

I'm not certain about the iPad, so take what I say with a grain of salt. For my iPhone/iPod(s) I have to use my iTunes account for all of it. Music can be used without authorizing iTunes (I imagine you have to sync the iPad frequently since it has such little storage) if it's newer purchases I believe, but old purchases have to be upgraded to get that ability... which sucks because when I was looking at doing that it would've cost me $240!
Unfortunately, I think the apps are the same since I couldn't use iTunes to install one on my phone that I downloaded. If the person has done anything for locating the iPad it could be tracked through something like mobileme (which is being removed for iCloud) if it's online I think.

I would suspect it is stolen and try to get it back to the original owner.
If you are determined to ignore karma and tempt fate, then you should restore it (via iTunes) back to factor defaults. This will erase everything on the iPad and let you set it up as if you had just purchased it. Is it a 3G model? If so, I would also get rid of the SIM card.
