I'm glad to see someone else actually knows about that. I wrote a research paper last semester about how genetic modification will extend our lives and eventually make us immortal. I'm not so much hoping for eternity in this body. I really would like to use gene therapy to live long enough to get my consciousness uploaded on a computer, then I'm practically guaranteed forever, whereas I could die any second in this body.


On the topic of overcrowding however. I'm a pessimist and I fully expect almost all of humanity to break down into constant wars over resources in the next few centuries. I heard a statistic on a PBS show I think that said if the whole world consumed as much as the US did, it would take seven Earths to provide for everyone. I think we're fucked.

Just because gene therapy can potentially prevent age related deterioration doesn't mean that it would be able to make us immortal..even if we cured "old age", we'd still be susceptible to various causes of death (e.g. poisoning, blunt-force trauma, auto-erotic asphyxiation, etc.).

One thing I saw on TV a while ago mentioned how scarce our water sources are becoming..it was mentioned that, even today, there is cause for panic regarding our limited water supply. :sip:

as if you couldn't die any second if you lived in a digital world?
viruses, hackers, power outages, hell even a solar flare, all could easily wipe you and your digital life from existance. without your body you would have no way to experience life anyway.
this whole 'upload me!' fad is pretty stupid imo.

Immortality isn't invincibility, I know. That's my concern with my consciousness being uploaded onto something less expendable.
