Overpopulation and Selective Breeding
    #14676884 -

Over the course of the next century our world is going to become overpopulated to the point it becomes unlivable, even the history channel did a 2 week special over this, as the future is getting closer and closer it seems hitler may of had a few things right, the only way there is going to be a world for our children is if we choose who our children are going to be, not everyone in this world today is worthy of life, noone can deny that, should our outdated vision of their right to live love and reproduce be allowed to destroy the world for those who can better enjoy, experience, and take care of it?

Everyone has different ideas of what constitutes worthiness..pretty much all of us have enemies, so yeah, pretty much all of us thinks that some people are not worthy of life.

What is so "outdated" about that vision? What if the majority of humanity deems you as being unworthy of life? What would you think then? Would that be fair?

I think it's likely we will find ways to use technology that this isn't a major problem. Just because the history channel says something might happen certainly doesn't mean it will, some of the shit they put on is very sensationalized, such as Ancient Aliens.

At the worst policies like the one baby per couple thing in China may have to be put in place all over the world but I don't believe that will be necessary and I sure hope it doesn't come to that.

That's exactly the type of technology I'm talking about. If we can discover a fuel source powerful enough to actually travel easily in space I don't think it would be difficult at all to colonize other planets at that point.

Fusion solves the travel issue, also food and water production.

You can't build enough ships to keep up with the birth rate though, you can't export people fast enough.
You have to find a way to feed them. And that means fusion power.

If you have ever flown on a plane, then you have most likely realized that much, if not most land is unused (at least in the US:usa:).

You surely aren't speaking of extrasolar planets..one of the closest terrestrial extrasolar planets is 15 light years away, I doubt we'd ever make it there using traditional space-travel. Even if we do, there is no guarantee that we'd be able to survive landing on its surface, or being exposed to its environment if we do land on its surface. Our best bet (in terms of successfully colonizing extrasolar planets) is to learn how to harness the power of wormholes so that we can essentially teleport to faraway worlds.

The only planet in our solar system that we might be able to colonize is Mars, but even that would be difficult, and such an effort would surely prone to disaster. I think it might take several more generations before humans can successfully colonize other planets..we haven't even colonized the moon, and doing so would be much easier/safer than colonizing Mars, or terrestrial extrasolar planets.

Moon isn't a planet, Mars is a better investment as a colony world.
But also there's plenty of land here, as you said.

Venus is a possibility in a few centuries, we need to crash an asteroid into it to bring in water and knock loose some CO2.

Compare a lunar colony to europeans colonizing Greenland.
If you're going to go to the trouble, you might as well sail a little further and land in Nova Scotia.

Eugenics is a tricky path to walk. Who among us is truly worthy at a genetic level? And who determines our worth?

I never said the moon is a planet, just that colonizing it would be easier/safer than colonizing Mars, or some extrasolar planet. I think we should colonize the moon before we colonize Mars, because everything that we learn from colonizing the moon can be used to help make colonizing Mars as easy/safe as possible.

Considering this:

Venus is covered with an opaque layer of highly reflective clouds of sulfuric acid, preventing its surface from being seen from space in visible light. Venus has the densest atmosphere of all the terrestrial planets in the solar system, consisting mostly of carbon dioxide.

...I don't think there's much hope for Venus colonies.

well who owns the earth? if no one owns it, then no one has the right to dictate who can breed on it.

i'd much rather see measures taken to encourage the reduction of reproduction (hehe) than enforced selective breeding. selective breeding poses a bunch of ethical problems and seems like the precursor of a dystopian sci-fi movie

What does "genetically superior" mean? I think everybody has the same "right" to buttfuck each other, yes.

Colonizing the moon probably wouldn't help us a great deal when it comes to colonizing other planets it'd be a whole different ball game. The moon has no atmosphere which means we'd have to create artificial environments. Since planets have an atmosphere it would be possible to terraform them and eventually make the atmosphere survivable for us. Of course I don't see this happening in our life time but it's fascinating to think about.

We should start a Moon v Mars thread, instead of jacking this one.

Nah.

Once you have a martian colony, a lunar outpost makes more sense.
Again compare to Greenland, more useful as a stopping point than a destination.

But we need a planet, desperately.
We've only got one, and if it gets damaged somehow we are SOP.
Global climate change, asteroid strike, magnetic inversion, lots of ways to really ruin our habitat.

We aren't going to live outdoors on Mars in the next five centuries.

also the reason we havent colonized the moon has more to do with its lack of gravity, magnetic field, and atmosphere, all major obstacles, mars would cost less in the end
