Talking to/asking farmers about hunting on their property. Advice?

This's something I've been considering more and more after many unsuccessful hunts through grass/woods (found a ton of mushrooms and got some cool pictures, but nothing active).
I'm sure the general consensus would be "just talk to them faggot," but I'd still like input from anyone who's done this before. How did it go for you, and what did you say to them? Is honesty the best policy for something like this? Or is it more advisable to do it under some other guise (university student researching fungii or whatever). The way I see it, farmers must know the deal by now and probably wouldn't appreciate someone trying to bullshit them for a free high.
Even if you haven't done this, how would you play it? Thanks for reading. Your reward is Mario climbing a vine for all eternity.

fact is farmers dont want kids on their fields fucking with their cows and or messing stuff up. when you step onto a field late at night an they see or hear you it spooks them and they usually start mooing which wakes up the farmer.
Also alot of farmers salt their fields or use fungicides for the very reason of keeping people off their property.
BUT say you did find someone who would knowingly let you take shrooms from their field that immediately makes them an accessory if you do something stupid or get hurt while on the shrooms because if police are involved they are going to want to know where you got them from and if the police find out the farmers knew or allowed you to go on their property and take an illegal drug off it for consumption or sale its their ass. I had some friends who had the same idea years ago and the response from the farmers wasnt very good. some even threatened to call the police and give the information so they could be investigated. farmers arent stupid they know what the shrooms are for and why people want them.
in my experience go to the fields alone or with one person and be very discreet and stay as far away from the cattle as possible. dont bring flashlights wear dark clothes and be quiet. because farmers releasing pissed off dogs to chase you down or getting salt pellets shot at you sucks and fucking hurts.

No, I would never talk to a farmer about that. Too much risk. Just be discreet and fast and if worse comes to worse you're just passing through. Stay far away from barns/houses and like said above, the livestock.

The word you're looking for is Field Biology
What you're looking at is plants in the grass asnd you carry a determination guide.
You can actually provide the farmer a REAL service and look how to determine species that are toxic and cause staggers etc in livestock, and report back to the farmer whether he has a problem.

no they dont, I've never met a single farmer that's going to kill his fields with salt when he has cattle to graze and never met one that's going to spend thousands extra on fungicides to keep people from trespassing, that's what fences, signs and cops are for

rocksalt tears up the barrel of a shotgun and only works at close range, I personally use 00 buck in the shotgun, .308 in the rifle and .45 in the pistol, seems most others around here use a similar method for deterrence
I personally would rather someone come to me and ask than start sneaking around, you've obviously never asked because while most farmers may be unwilling to let people hunt mushrooms it's based on insurance liability and not complicity in a drug crime. sneaking around someone's property at night results in a higher probability of you being shot or seriously injured... yeah, imagine finding that gopher hole at 2am while you're running from that bull you were unaware was in that field you were trespassing in... now imagine the trouble when the cops come get you the next morning
always ask, yes the farmer knows what's up, he knows you're hunting for mushrooms and what they do, but in following advice like Wiccan gave the farmer gets a little something in return

I would never bring up the word mushroom. Farmers dont salt their fields. Never heard of that. even my uncle is a farmer.
I WOULD NEVER sneak around someones property or a farmer in this case. Chances are they will have a shotgun.

I asked a farmer if I could go metal detecting on his land once and he was quite happy to let me do it.
Theres a possible way to hunt treasure and shrooms ;-)
If you do ask them about hunting mushrooms then you need to be more than just a magic mushroom hunter really. A farmer would probably be more likely to let a mycologist hunt than some psy hippy ;-) its all a matter of how you present yourself.

I was speaking from experience. I was told by a farmer that the reason some fields never had any mushroom growth was from salting the fields and not in the ancient way where it kills everything its just a little enough to keep mushrooms from growing. It's possible they were lying but that's just what I was told firsthand. I was also going off first hand about farmers not liking to be asked if you can go on their property for drugs because even if they allow you on the field a mole hole or any other injury is still possible then what? And for the salt pellet the farmers in my area all used salt pellets because if you have a bunch of kids in your property on warm summer nights after a rain most people are looking to scare kids off with a loud noise and maybe a little stinging not kill them. This was all personal experience in a very old fashioned city in a conservative state my experience may be a little skewed but that's what happened a forum is for different opinions an these are mine.

You could pick a farm with a lake and ask the owner if you can go fishing.

Mushrooms grow from cow patties anyway. Unless they're walking around salting the individual patties as they age...

I'd rather not confront the farmer about my wrong-doings. I would probably just walk onto the farm without permission. Sure it might be a dick move, but there's no harm done.

I'd have you arrested if you're lucky, and while waiting the 45 minutes I'd have you digging a very deep hole and you'd swear you were digging your own grave... of course, I may not call the cops at all and you'll just keep digging

I would just tell them you're looking for morels. i know they arent in season but most farmers were i'm at don't know what they are and even if they do, just say you're curious if they're still in season or if you just picked all the ones in your usual spot or something.
i definitely wouldn't trespass though. two of my uncles carry pistols since meth heads have been cooking in their woods
