LC to poo trays: Outdoor experiment.
    #14585454 - 06/09/11 01:02 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Hey folks,

Well, summer is here and it is time for another outdoor grow.  I have some left over LC (from grain LC) of EQ and PE and I decided to try some direct LC to poo trays.

I have 5 GladWare trays.  They each hold 3 cups of substrate or so.  Here is how I designed them.

Each tray has 13 injection ports.  Yes, I know that it is ridiculous, but the issue that arises with direct LC to poo is even distribution of the inoculum.  There is one GE port with micro pore tape in the center.  I inoculated each tray with about 1 ml per port.  The sub was made a little on the dry side to account for the extra moisture from the LC.

I made 2 trays each of EQ and PE.  I made tray of a 1:1 ratio of EQ to PE LC as well.

The substrate was poo, verm, earthworm castings and gypsum.  I PCed it for 90 min at 15 psi.  I decided to go with sterility given that the sub wouldn't be exposed at all.

I just figured I would post what I am up to right now.  I am just bored; waiting for my grain spawn to finish colonizing.

M

Crazy ton of injection ports but I must say, I admire your dedication.  Those are a bitch to silicone up.  Gotta make another dozen lids today myself

My question for you is have you done this type of thing before? I am thinking of doing something similar but I'm not sure the best route to go.
I just picked up a rectangular plastic window-box planter thingy. 25"x9"
Going to put that on my upstairs apartment patio and make up some sort of small outdoor bed today.  I have lots of aged poo, a bale of straw, EQ WBS spawn ready to rock and roll(110%).  Coir and verm too, gypsum, perlite for drainage, picked up some hydrated lime pelletized as well.  Wondering if I am forgetting anything or if I can expect much success?

Good luck to you!
Please excuse the long winded hi-jack as well.  I may or may not have put some weird blueish honey into my mate' this morning
My apologies.  My excitement and enthusiasm often get the best of me.

No worries.

I am just experimenting.  If I can get these to work well with consistency, I may never need grain spawn again.  :tongue2:

Anyway, I have done outdoor grows successfully.  I just took a colonized tray and put it in a hole with some hydrated verm in the bottom.  I then covered the tray with a layer of grass clippings.  It worked quite well.  Check my signature.

Problem is your missing the biggest part of the nutes, the grain. Had you mixed 10-30% grain in there, colonization would be better requiring fewer inoculation points, and fruiting would be better.

I'm guessing your colonization will go well, but fruiting will be sparse. I'm interested to see how it goes though.

Check out Blue Helix and his poo bag injections with LC. Heres one thread talking about it:

Good work on your sig thread.  Very inspiring

What is your sub mix in those trays?

In your opinion, what is the best substrate mix for a small outdoor bed that will be on my patio and be watered 1x-2x day?

I have horse poo, straw, coir, verm, lime, gypsum, pretty much whatever route I want to go I got it covered...not just need to get to work

Thoughts?

I considered that, but I saw thislog by stonesun.  He used just straight poo.  I figured I would just give it a try.  This mycellium is very robust and itching to fruit.  The grain LCs I worked up sat for about 2 days fully colonized before I could find the time to use them and they looked like they were forming knots in the jars.  It was so strange.  I have never seen that on straight grain before.

I used a lot of h poo, worm poo, coffee grounds, some coir, verm and gypsum.

I think there will be plenty of nutrients to go around.

Possibly. Pan Cyans are a bit different though. Cubes need alot more meat on their bones. Pan cyans are like toothpicks, literally.

Here is an example of my other trays.  These trays were spawned the usual way with grain.  The substrate is the same.

They were spawned 3-4 days ago and they are almost finished.  This culture is nuts.

It will be interesting to make a comparison between the two.

Well, the poo trays are colonizing nicely right now.  They have nice rhizomorphic growth, although they took a little long to get going.

I put the red lid rye blocks outdoors a couple days ago.  It should be interesting to see how they turn out.

I have 8 6 quart shoe box blocks on the way; each has 2 quarts of spawn.

We will see where the great outdoors takes us.

Well, I just checked my outdoor patches (the 3 mini blocks and the outdoor patch I filled in with some extra spawn) and some raccoon or possum tore it all up.  The outdoor patch was dug up, but the rye grain was still all there.  The blocks were all smashed but once again the grain was still there.  Fucking pests.  I recovered all the spawn and broken up blocks with a mixture of grass clipping and verm.  We will see if they can recover.  The blocks were about to start fruiting.  I am so incredibly pissed.

I had no problems with this last year.

It is strange because the blocks have been outside for about 4 days untouched.  The patch didn't even make it 24 hours.

Any tips or tricks to keep those fucks out of my grow?  Chicken wire? Moth balls?

Problem solved.  I will simply fruit my mush blocks in some old rabbit cages I have around.  I never knew those would come in handy some day.  They may even work better than placing them on the ground.  The wire will allow better pinning on the sides and maybe even the bottom.

Thanks.  I had no critter issues last year.  Strange.  I am just glad I used some extra mush blocks to test before putting out the main part of my grow; they could have been all torn up from the damn raccoons.

My .22 LR is seeming better every day, but I think the cages will keep those fuckers out.  The cages are very strong and well made with bars every 1" or so.

The LC to straight poo cakes are throwing up pins now.  It is interesting to note that the poo cake in which I mixed 50/50 EQ and PE LC is pinning the most vigorously; it has approximately 8 or so pins right now.  It just started pinning within the past 24 hours.

Pics to follow.

What happened with the above one, spawned in the usual way, was that what got tore up by critters?

It is actually pinning right now.  It has a few mature fruits.  They are small and peculiar -PE and EQ spawned together.  I watered it daily and it seemed to recover; the critters never touched it again.  Strange.

That is a poo-cake inoculated with LC.  No grain was mixed with the substrate, just straight h and worm poo, verm, gypsum and a little coir.  If you look closely there are many pins.

I will get some pictures of the other trays that got tossed around by beasties.

Update on the poo tray...

This is a PE/EQ mix.  I used 6 mL of each strain's LC in a 12 mL syringe, then carefully mixed and inoculated the cake.  After colonization, the cakes were "cased" with a thin layer of vermiculite, pseudo-fresh grass clippings and then deposited outside for fruiting.

Fruits from the patch that got rocked by raccoons.  They were from an equal mixture of PE and EQ spawn.  I have harvested about 25 g fresh from that patch thus far.  I have another 7 or so coming in.

This was made from a 50/50 mix of PE and EQ LC.
