potency question in regards to harvesting
    #1464645 - 04/16/03 05:03 PM (20 years, 10 months ago)

this guy whos my friends dogwalker wanted me to ask the following:

I know the ideal time to harvest is when the veil starts to break. However, I am a little confused as in almost every pic I have seen of fruiting casing or cakes, people allow the mushrooms to grow untill the cap opens and the veil drops, or in some cases untill the cap turns upright or flattens out. I know this is done when spore printing. Does doing this have a signifigant impact on the potency? I have heard that you can let the mushies grow and the potency loss is barely even noticable or is it a big difference and it would be better to harvest before the caps open up? Any thoughts on the potency issue here

I can't tell any difference in potency.

I think the reasoning is if some stupid monkey let the shroom open more then when the veil breaks it just takes water from the casing and doesn't add to potency or weight.

But open shrooms the monkey likes!

Veiled caps are pretty, but they do drop spores which, IMO, can lead to surface contamination. For many reasons, its best to pick them before the veil breaks.

i'm not sure whether mushrooms with the veils still intact are more potent by weight, but i think they are. i don't think it matters too much though. a bigger concern is the caps opening up and dropping spores all over the casing surface, inhibiting further flushes. people let the caps open up for print making or just because they like seeing the mushrooms grow to maturity. if you're not printing though, i'd say pick 'em right before the veil breaks.

Or you can grow some malabars and the veil stays attached pretty much until the cap is fully developed and opened all the way!

There should be no potency loss, you will only have to consume more to reach the desired effect. This is why most harvest right as the veil breaks...

I think they continue to produce the active chemicals after the veil breaks. I have never found a difference in regards to the amount that must be consumed at any stage of maturity.

I was convinced that once the veil broke the fruit-body stops producing alkaloids. Therefore, if you let a fruit-body get too big, you're only making it harder on yourself, seeing as how you would have to eat a larger mushroom to get the same effect that a smaller one would do.

I just don't think that is true. I guess someone with some good lab equipment needs to check this out.
