I don't give a fuck about IPTG. It's essentially irrelevant to my concerns.

I see what's going on here, anyway. My opponents don't disagree with me, they just don't share my respect for my fellow man.

My concern is that unmodified seed stocks become scarce in the face of terminator crops, and that one of these years Monsanto might encounter manufacturing difficulties which prevent all the farms that feed America from getting the seed stock for which they've come to depend on Monsanto. We either run short on food, or have such small surpluses that food becomes too expensive for everybody to eat.

Why is this not a legitimate concern? IS THERE SOMETHING I'M MISSING? PLEASE TELL ME.

Or what if the destruction of crop diversity fucks us over in a different way, ie: the monocultured corn and potatoes are hit with a blight or an aggresssive pest and since everything has been geared around these select few varieties there's no buffer.  But this is a future concern.  WE ALREADY KNOW that GM seed HAS ALREADY CORRUPTED heirloom genetics.  There are many examples but look at Mexican corn.

I disagree with you.  From the bit I have read here I disagree with your fear of massive famine.  I dont think such a fear is justified and the US population would be able to feed itself in the events that you have described.

And I hope you're right. This is one of those times when I'd prefer to be wrong. I just don't see how the US would be able to feed its population in the absence of corn.

Tell me this, smart guy, when would a tomato and a jellyfish make it in the wild?

When a third species with unique abilities facilitates it, thats when.  Organisms reproduce in many esoteric, novel ways - this is just one example of it.

Maybe somewhere out there is a tomato hanging on the edge of a cliff above the sea. And somehow the seawater splashes the tomato so that the myriad of unexplored marine viruses manage to retain some of the tomato DNA before they go back to sea. And they it just happens that one such virus has its genome integrated into the genome of a newly conceived jellyfish zygote and there you have it:

A tomato jellyfish :pipesmoke:

Tchan909, the answer is the lac operon, but as i said it was a mean tricky question so don't feel bad :stoned:

Honestly this was the simplest question I could come up. I know Spiderbaby is trying to make Tchan feel better this is 101 stuff.

I wonder if its possible to engineer prion-like peptides in plant food with a delayed progression of neurodegeneration. In this way it would be too late till people become aware and everyone will be compromised by then :gameover:

Yeah just insert a mutant APP which has an Aβ section that is more prone to aggregation. There are a few proteins you could use, it would be such an evil crop. Great idea! :highfive:

Tchan909 as F1 hybrids are already in widespread use our food supply is already so dependent on corporation produced seeds I don't think GM will change anything, just more of the same really

Once the belly starts to rumble, mindsets change and people do what they have to.  There is so much waste and opulence by the average citizen, I think it would take more than corn crop failure to do what you fear.

fema camps, they have enough rations to feed millions of people for years they made a contract with someone to make the food rations already

not saying thats why they did it but just saying its possible we could live off there cardboard rations for a little while at least

I just thought it was very crafty how you used the word "element" as in a sciency question people would automatically start thinking or chemical elements

I suppose you're right DieCommie. I see people casually wasting so much food in this country that it's not hard to imagine a change in behavior might stave off a famine.

I appreciate that you've addressed my concerns directly rather than attempted to discredit me with pedantic diversions.

This is actually the only reason I didn't mention the lac operon and emphasized the involvement of sulfur instead. :whatever: "Crafty" indeed.

Animal genes have never been transplanted into crops destined for food.

In a lab, yes.  In the grocery store, no.

There are far worse things that genetic engineering: cars, guns, planes, cigarettes, fat etc etc. People are afraid of the unknown which is what GE seems to be to most people.

The fact that some particularly ignorant and moronic individuals swear up and down that GM crops can somehow poison or damage humans doesn't change the unrelated fact that there are very real reasons for concern about terminator crops.

The concerns about terminator crops are the very same concerns that apply to F1 crops but nobody cares about that even though they are in widespread use.

Yeah F1s can be patented, do you really think a famine would occur just over a patent? If there was a dispute with farmers food prices may rise for a while but if it got out of hand the state would have to step in

So enlighten me - are all the F1 crops in current use patented and sold by a single corporate source?
