Allright dumbass, this is simple. you are what you eat.
If you consume GMO food products on a regular basis its bound to mess with your genetic code in the long run.
I really dont want my food to make its own poison to kill bugs. how do that know constantly eating that shit wont make you sick?
i know poisons are designed to kill by weight, but still.

haha you clearly have no idea how the digestive system or genetics works, you should probably go educate yourself about the technology of genetic engineering before you spout your uninformed and ridiculous opinion.
word
There is a certain risk involved (e.g. cell wall fragments of host producing bacteria contaminating final product etc) but this nowhere near what random fuckers think of GE.
And yeah thats a hella uneducated statement. you eat GMO so you become GMO This ain John Carpenter's Thing yo!

Thats not what I was saying at all. I was suggesting the opposition to genetic engineering, just like the opposition to many new technologies, is born of misunderstanding and fear of the new rather than real imminent danger.
I only support it if it is used for good and the proper controls are in place, tests done etc. However its ricockulous to hear people opposing it based on completely false information or complete lack of understanding.
And Mellowparty, good to see another molecular biologist chiming in on this.

I'm against GMO's. I don't think they're bad for the health of the people who eat them, but I think they are VERY bad for the economy. It dawns on me that if something goes wrong at Monsanto then the food supply would be totally fucked within a year.
tl;dr: I'm not against genetically modified crops but I am against the way we're pursuing them.

Anyway back on topic, I understand how the technology works and the potential risks but I still would support using this technology if it can solve problems or help people. People are sometimes afraid of new things they don't understand, trains, electricity and television were all feared/viewed suspiciously by some when they arrived and I believe all the anti GM hype to be no different.
if your so smart i would have thought "plant toxins" in bold listed under dna damage would be pretty self explained. Its not like you even posted a source when you called bs on that other guy so your one to talk....
and if you actually did understand how this technology works, and how humans have been using technology, you wouldn't want anyone touching it with a 10 foot poll

The international journal of biological sciences released a study that concluded GMO corn was linked to organ failure in rats. - link Someone did mention earlier that poisons kill by weight, but consuming GMOs for years upon end would seem to result in one being exposed to toxins more than ever before in history. What does that mean for humans who consume GMOs regularly?
Lots of really good points that i agree with have already been mentioned - that the FDA doesn't require GMO foods to be labelled as such, that GMOs compete with "natural" foods in the market, and the way that monsanto does business. oh, and on that note, the way that GMOs, once introduced into the environment, pollinate neighboring crops that were non-GMO, thus creating some hybrid monsters- and monsanto uses that as an excuse to sue the farmers who unwillingly had their crops pollinated by GMOs (I heard about this from the documentary "Food, Inc."). Even places as far as Mexico have been touched by the GM seeds carried by winds - [url=video shows the Mexican corn that was pollenated unknowingly. (starts around 4:20)[/url]
So, I'm not saying its necessarily bad for human consumption, but more research needs to be done to determine long-term effects. I believe that we should've kept GMOs under control to begin with. GMOs should also be labelled so that consumers can be informed as to what they're purchasing. The FDA should not be allowed to cater to any company or industry - it should be unbiased. And something should be done to keep GMOs from pollenating non-GMOs.

Well that's a laugh. That hope was busted the moment the genetic material hit the wind. It's a giant experiment conducted in the dark and the potential impacts are immense to put it lightly.

Honestly, I don't know how you can possibly avoid being against GMO's when you take into consideration that the entire country now subsists on self-terminating seed stocks, which need to be purchased fresh from the manufacturer every year, the only one of which (by law) is Monsanto.
This is bad fucking news. How anybody could be thick enough not to see the implications of this is beyond me. I'm starting my own garden because I refuse to be caught with my pants down when the country's food supply simply dries up.

Yeah, it's definitely the major environmental issue from my perspective, but no celebrity activists have taken up the cause yet so no one cares about it. They're all still obsessed about carbon

I called bs on that other guy because he was spouting bullshit
And putting the word plant toxins from a quoted wikipedia article in bold is not a reasonable explanation as to why you think eating a GM plant will somehow alter your own genetic code. Eating a GM plant is no more likely to alter your genetic code than eating its non GM counterpart, unless of course the evil biotech companies decide to insert DNA encoding viruses or toxins into food crops
Viveka, good point but plants can be grown in lab environments to prevent pollen escape or terminator technology can be used so viable genetic material won't be passed onto wild populations during outdoor trials so controlled experimentation with GM crops is possible. Unfortunately trials aren't always so tightly controlled so you're all stuck eating GM whether you like it or not

Sure they can but that doesn't change the fact that the stuff has already been unleashed into the wild and continues to be every day.

Right, kinda how all the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park were designed to be females. That didn't work out too swell for John Hammond and his special guests, did it? The terminator tech will be busted in the wild, it's only a matter of time(if it hasn't happened already).

I didn't know Jurassic Park was real . . . perhaps i should rethink my position on GM technology, do you have any links to reports on the Jurassic Park incident?

I See Viveka's point, but just because it happened overnight in a movie doesn't mean it'll happen overnight IRL. I think the chances of the US being rescued from famine in the nick of time by random gene mutations are about as high as the chances of Jurassic Park having been a real documentary with totally unedited footage.

I'm actually fairly well-versed in molecular biology, and again, my problem with GMO's isn't with their supposed danger to health (which is nonexistent) but with their very obvious danger to the country's food supply. I've seen enough boom-bust cycles to know that it's foolish to rely on the invisible hand of the market to feed three hundred million people.
I have yet to be told why I'm wrong to be concerned. The best I've heard so far is, "Well it worked out in Jurassic Park." This is not sufficient.

I wasn't aware this was a pissing contest. I didn't say that I knew all about how gene splicing worked, I just claimed not to be ignorant on the subjects about which I'm speaking.
Anyway, a frantic Wiki visit would appear to indicate that IPTG is used to prevent a subject organism from metabolizing recombinant genes by virtue of its sulfur atom. I could be wrong, and if I am it doesn't matter, because unless I'm sorely mistaken (and I would like you to correct me if so), that is not what this conversation is really about.
