question about my sound card not working

ok so I was trying to install this new hd4760 graphics card into a pcix16 slot, the problem was it was right next to another pci slot with a sound card in the slot, and the fan was taking up too much room so I had to remove the sound card, just to see if the graphics card fit. I ended up taking the graphics card out, not installing it, and putting the old graphics card back in, just until I could buy a sound chip or a sound card usb device.
the problem is, my computer has no sound. I've turned off the computer, and tried to take out the sound card and refit it, like a billion times now, to no avail. I can't figure out what's wrong, the driver is still in working order, no problems in device manager. anybody know what I messed up? I also took out the graphics card, reseated it, and the computer booted up fine with it in there. why did the sound card fail? do you think I fried it when I grabbed it with my hands? I wasn't grounded or anything, I don't know. only thing I can figure out is that.
I have a dell dimension 4700 with matching motherboard, if by some chance, someone knows about placing cards in pci slots, and thinks I didn't place it properly, feel free to let me know. it could be very possible I need to press a clip inwards or something, though I couldn't find one, and that shouldn't effect the performance of the card at all once I put it back into the pci slot.

Try removing the sound card, boot the computer, shutdown the computer, install the sound card, boot the computer and see what happens. What version of winblows are your running?

windows xp.
wow, that's crazy. I had like a psychic moment, I'm not even lying, I took a nap, and had a dream someone was telling me to remove it, boot it, turn it off, put it back in, then reboot and see what happens. I saw your post here and flipped for a second, total deja vu
ok I'll try it out and see what happens. if that still doesn't work, then I'm guessing it's fried, not impossible, right? at least not if you give off a static charge or w/e. it can happen without you knowing it as far as I know.

Close, but first go into device manager and "uninstall" your card by right clicking the sound card.. Then just reboot without taking your new card out.
Should do the trick.

yeah, at first I was trying to figure out why taking it out and putting it back in wasn't working at all. but I took the advice or taking it out, booting the pc, then putting it back in and booting the pc. now it works great, thanks a bunch.
anyway yes, when I connect the external sound card, I'll uninstall the current sound drivers first, then install the new sound card, and when I pull out the current video card, and connect the new video card, I'll do the same thing, uninstall current drivers

I've actually run into problems with one client's wireless card where your method (of removing the driver from device manager) doesn't work. The remove card, boot, shutdown, install card, boot always works, but is a bit more work and risky to the hardware.

I never have, but seeing as you have more experience I'll add your method to my back-up bag "o" tricks for future use.
Having read, and benefited from, your advice here... there's no doubt in my mind that advice from you is worth remembering.

It was an odd case with an older 802.11 wireless card for a desktop computer running XP. Device manager would show an error (0x08 if I remember correctly) which would remain, even through an uninstall device and reboot. I was pretty sure the hardware was faulty, but the problem occurred on two computers at the same time (probably due to a windows update), which seemed to point to software. I discovered the fix (remove hardware, reboot, install hardware, reboot) by accident as I was trying to isolate the hardware as the problem. Moving the card to another slot also fixed the issue. I assume there was some registry entry that wasn't getting removed properly on a simple uninstall. Who knows... I hate Windows; junk OS.
