Anyone here good at Mathematics?
    #14649960 - 06/21/11 06:23 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Can someone tell me how to do this problem:
http://online.math.uh.edu/Math3321/ch3/s32/index.html
Go to the link, click on "section 3.2", then exercises for 3.2, and look at problem 15.

I don't necessarily want anyone to do it for me, I just need someone to get me started.  Also I can't ask my prof for help because the class is online.

Thanks

For the first part, just plug it in and see if it works.  Thats basically all you can do to check a solution to a differential equation.  As for linear independence, there are a few ways to do this I believe.  I am used to using the Wronsken, does that word ring a bell?

Yup I got the linear independence part, and I can use the Wronskian part.  Problem is they didn't give me anything to "plug in."

The function - the integral.  That is y2, that is the solution to the differential equation.  Presumably you can take its derivative twice and then factor out the common factor (which would hopefully include any un-doable integrals).  That is my thought.  There are special techniques to solving certain classes of equations and I don't know if this is one of them.  The notes seem like the beginning of the class though, so I assume those techniques are to come.

edit
Oh, its y1 that is the solution they want, not y2 right?  I think that makes it a little more ugly, but the idea is the same.  Might need implicit differentiation to get those derivatives.
