What is your favorite, legal ethno?
    #1454004 - 04/13/03 12:26 AM (20 years, 11 months ago)

I honestly haven't tried a tenth of what's out there. What's your favorite and why? How difficult is it to grow?

I like kava a lot. Fresh, good quality kava is one of my favorite ethnobotanicals. Anything below top quality isn't worth doing imo. I miss the stuff  :frown:

ilex paraguayensis - (che is drinking it above) very calming stimulant brew, if done in the traditional ways (lots of herb!);
salvia divinorum - legal, tasty and very strong when 'freshly dried'...
both are very easy to grow.

Hi felixhigh,

How do the ilex paraguayensis tea bags compare to the traditional methods of preparation. I was thinking of trying some tea bags available in some health food shops in the UK. Che Mate

Yeah I love mate, should have mentioned it in the first place. Cant say anything about the tea bags, I haven't tried them. I always drink it the traditional way, with a bombilla and gourd like Che in my sig. It is very pleasurable, and I don't understand why it's not more widespread in the west. It is definately not "just another caffeine plant", its just like felixhigh mentioned both calming and stimulating. I go through more than a kilo of the dried herb a month.

hi SE! you sure should give mate a try... actually we don't have mate in baggies here i think mostly because it wouldn't do much for you.
look at the gourd at your picture... it is not a large gourd. now assume that half of it's inner volume is full with herb and the rest of the room is for the water. now you've got a good ammount of mate... good for a couple people also. or for one person in the long run...
as the gourd is kinda hard to prepare for some ocidental people,  you can simply bypass it and make it in a coffee maker...  should work but that would take off lots of the magic i think...

entheomation: use more mate! you can't die on this one, the worst thing that might happen is a fucked up insomnia...

young: where are you from dude?

Yeah yerba mate rocks!

Tea bags blow mad goats. I looked at tea bags of it and stuff that they sell in this hippy store where I live, and the doses are so small it just pisses me off. You need to have a BIG bag of mate. I have these big bags of cruz de malta, which is supposed to be the most potent kind, and I just shovel it into the mugs before I prepare. The north american companies who produce mate where I live make these tiny little bags of 5 ounces for 12$ (canadian). Such bullshit. The kilo bags I drink cost 8 bucks.

Tips for preparation:

Do not use boiling water.. this is bad. As soon as bubbles start to form in the tea kettle you gotta take it off the element and pour it in. I learned this from an argentinian. Boiling water makes it way more bitter and destroys some of the key ingredients.

For your morning cup have your handful of mate in the bottom of your gourd/mug with just enough water to cover it soaking overnight. This will make it more potent when you pour the rest of the gourdful of pre-boiling water in it.

Use lots. Go nuts. Drink a huge container of it for the supreme mate buzz.

Entheogen is the word you are looking for pertaining to plants which are perceived to have "god contained therein" or something similar...

Well, no, the word he's looking for is "ethno" which is short for "ethnobotanicals." Isn't that what this thread is about? If not why are we talking about yerba mate?

Where's a good place to get yerba?

I got some from Lotus light back when I was a retailer.

I can't get it wholesale anymore, and LL sucks anyway.

like they said ethno is a prefix for races like ethnicity. entheo is for plants that can change perception or get you high if you will. peace

ethno when applied to botany makes ethnobotany which means plants used by/for people. So the definition still applies. As long as the poster and the replies understand what the definitions mean.

entheo means God(s) so entheogens are producers of god-like states.

If someone were to say what's your favorite ethnobotanical (or ethno assuming you understand botanical) you could say tomato or corn or salvia or calea or HBWR, but if someone were to say what's your favorite entheogen or entheo you could reply, HBWR, Salvia, calea.

Thus if your a logician or math freak then perhaps this makes sense.

Entheogens are a subset of Ethnobotanicals.
