LOL!  I remember a day when I was pretty strung out on crack and I went to this local corner convenient store, and they had Brillo, car antennas , and baking soda all in the same row.  :lmafo:  one stop shopping baby!  Yes, I was one of the MANY people that took those three items to the counter.  Oh, yes and I forgot to mention that I walked to that store from the "seedy hotel" that was in the same lot. :wow:

I have colonized at least 100 jars with a 90mm lid, with 2 1/4" holes drilled trough it, used upside down, with a square of postal tyvek over it held down by the lid band. I made some of fahtsters lids out of tyvek, duct tape and silicone because i did not like throwing away non-biodegradable tyvek and PC crisped alum foil.
I now use a jar lid with a 1/4" hole drilled through the center, with a US Quarter Dollar sized piece of a synthetic filter disc siliconed on the "underside".
I do mostly Grain to Grain transfers, and i start my grain masters with agar, so injection ports are superfluous to me.
Since i started using the synthetyic filter discs i have seen faster colonization and fewer contaminates. I did not see much contamination with tyvek filters, and my methods of preparing spawn are more developed and precise now, but things just seem to be going better with the SFD's.
Tyvek works, poly works, SFD's work, shit, a 1" thick vermiculite barrier seems to work, so use what you can get and feel comfortable with.
I opted for the SFD's because they LAST, do not require alum foil, and seem to offer superior steam penetration in the PC for sterilization and superior gas exchange during colonization, based on my observations.
All mushrooms do is decompose dead stuff and create goodies. I aspire to do the same, no waste. Once they start making compostable petri dishes like the coffee cups, i will be a happy mycophile.

If you already have the verm layer tyvek should work just fine. I've read tons of posts that say you don't need to use anything if you have a verm layer.

Post deleted by RogerRabbit<p>Reason for deletion: It's bad enough one person posting that link, but let's not keep quoting it over and over.

Besides, the PO tyvek is the worst choice.  It's too thin and the pore size can open considerably during pressure cooking.  Use kite or coverall tyvek for best results as jar filters.

No more posting PO links.  That's been a long-standing rule around here.

:imwithstupid:  :whathesaid:

All of these filter materials, that have been mentioned above, HAVE been proven to work.  But, what makes a filter material "the best" is it's efficiency and life span in ratio to cost.  Medical grade tyvek and synthetic filer disks are the best filter materials for GE due to NOT only their aesthetic-ness and cost,.  THEY ARE DESIGNED TO WITHSTAND THE INTENSE HEAT OF THE PC'ING CYCLE FOR AS LONG AS YOU PRACTICE MYCOLOGY.

Anybody who tells you that postal tyvek envelopes (utilized as GE filter material for the mushroom culture) are superior over medical grade tyvek or synthetic filter disks, either has never used them, or doesn't have a good understanding of the various types of filter materials used in this hobby, what their made out of, and how they react to the intense heat of the PC.

Presto PC's are far less superior to All Americans too, but they work just the same! :super:
(Im so glad your ignoring me!)
:awejeez:

@RR
Out of my latest 100'ish jars, i had 2 contam, and this could have been improper procedure in-front of the flowhood...
If this stuff is as bad as you say, am i just lucky?
I would imagine after 10ish years, tyvek should have bit me in the ass by now..
I can say, that i dont try to "Reuse" the shit...
What makes painters tyvek so much better/heat resistant
And once again, why nazi on the PO links? "It's illegal to use PO Tyvek to grow illegal mushrooms...So dont use the Tyvek, and that makes things ok!"
Its very hypocritical...
Atleast give the masses a good reason why you are trying to suppress good information, like..."it cuts into our vendor sales"
I dont have a microscope, could you grab one of those 4 boxes of tyvek that i know you have on your shelf, and take us a picture of it, and one of a SFD...

If you HAVE to buy painter tyvek, you might as well go ahead and just buy the SFD then...
Heaven forbid something thats free and works get used...

Ill end this saying, im not saying that tyvek > SFD
But when it comes down to it, post office tyvek has worked for years for me...
And very lastly, what works for one, might not work for another in this game... :super:

Stealing is bad, mmmkay? It's that easy.

Plus, it's inferior tyvek. And even good tyvek makes an inferior filter.

Which gets us right back to the same place we were- go get polyfil.

Alot of people these days are permanently attaching the filter material to the lid. PO tyvek wont work for that. It is inferior. It does melt around the edges in the PC sometimes. I do agree that AA PC's and SFD will last longer, and in that respect are better.

I have a Presto and AA, same size. I prefer the Presto. I also use PO envelopes. I've used other material, but I like writing on the filter and tossing it. 1 envelope cut into 6 squares is perfect for a jar lid, and I do one part over and one under so its already folded. Keeps the lid clean, and I can write on the top. Toss it, easy cleanup.

In the end though, it really doesnt matter. People are aware of envelopes, if they dont want to use them, whats the difference? Same with polyfil, I hate the stuff for jar lids, but if you like it, who cares? Everyone use what you want, because what it boils down to, is it all works.

Also I think Doc Innoc gives good advice and deserves a better rating, so I gave him one.
