So, the idea with this thread is that I was just going to weekly or whenever I feel like it post up some music I have been listening to and see what you guys think of it. Of course people are welcome to add their music to this thread as well.
Here is an Australian band called Cog that really has been doing it for me lately.
Enjoy, and tell me what you think!

For everyone who loves Boards of Canada: check out Christ. He used to work with BoC and his sounds are very reminiscent of that Music has the right to children vibe.
This album is meant to be listened to in the dark with headphones.

I wasn't crazy for that song, but it had some good parts to it.
Here is a little Electric Wizard before they changed their style of vocals. Very good stuff for sure, especially if you like that kind of stoner/doom metal sound.

I take your stoner-doom (Electric Wizard wins BTW) and raise you some Tibetan-influenced bass-driven stoner doom:

Today, I rediscovered a band that I hadn't listened to in a long time. So I listened to one of their albums it its entirety and I remember why I love them so much.
I know some of you guys around here already like them, but for those of you who don't here is some Mars Volta.

You don't hear a lot of really good french metal bands besides Gojira, so here is another band called Gorod that is really really good sounding and amazingly skilled.

Gorod are excellent. Gojira I am not too impressed by.
However... the 2 bands which are at the complete forefront of the French metal scene and will remain their top-tier bands for years and years and years and years to come, are undoubtedly:
Deathspell Omega
The Repellent Scars of Abandon and Election (best heard with headphones, their absolute BEST song IMHO, and the lyrics are posted further down my post if you want to read along)
Epiklesis I/Wings of Predation
Dearth/Phosphene
Epiklesis II/Malconfort
and
Blut Aus Nord
The Last Journey of Ringhorn
Sons of Wisdom, Master of Elements
Elevation
Disciple's Libration (Lost In The Nine Worlds...)
Blut Aus Nord consider themselves "metaphysical extreme metal" with some very excellent dissonant riffage and a few moments of ambience going on.
Deathspell Omega are extreme, controlled, channeled chaos of the highest order. Very avant-garde and progressive, EXTREMELY technical (some consider them the Gorguts of Black Metal, and if you are familiar with Gorguts, their album Obscura especially, you will get this reference) almost to the point of being neo-classical (which they really are, many of their songs flow more as classical movements), very dissonant and atonal at times, and their latest album has hints of mathcore littered throughout.
Both are in my Top 5 favorite metal bands ever.
Oh, and DsO's lyrics are THE MOST thought-provoking lyrics I have EVER come across in metal, and arguably in any genre of music to exist. Their trilogy albums deal with the metaphysical relationship between Man, God, and Satan, and holy fuck are they intelligent and sophisticated. Their lyrics seem more like the ramblings of a crazed theologian on a heroic dose of psychedelics than those "lulz hail s4t4n!!1!" immature grim und frostbitten kvlt black metal weenies.
Example:
Quote:
The Repellent Scars of Abandon and Election lyrics
The feeling of destroying the capacity for inward peace, an insane dance with the angels of innocence admist thorns and in frenzy, the warmth of a divine blessing, a daringness which prevailed over any imaginable fear hovering on the brink of a voluntary act of contrition, but soon all pales besides the cry this shattering truth wrests from all fellow men, there is more to it than suffering and sounds of suffering, it is a process that only the extinction of a divine soul could terminate. The eye can outstare neither the sun, nor death... if I sought God it was in delirium and in the delight of temptation.
The idea of Salvation comes, I believe, from the one whom suffering breaks apart. He who masters it, on the contrary, needs to be broken, to proceed on the path towards the rupture.
Nothing of what man can know, to this end, could be evaded without degradation, without sin, - is it no burden to bear the repellent scars of abandon, of election? - it leaves but a state of supplication and deserted expanses, an absorption into despair. The existence of things cannot enclose the death which it brings to me; the existence is itself projected into my death, and it is my death which encloses it. Am I deranged? Over and above quietism! Nurtured by the multitude of man's misfortunes, a thousand halos like torches in the night of the spirit, a thousand traps, pitfalls of brimstone and the empty sky, prostrated face against the earth in frantic laughter...
I was beyond withstanding my own ignominy. I invoked it and blessed it. I progressed even further into vileness and degradation. Am I resurging, intact, out of infamy?
You will not find lyrics of this high of a caliber anywhere in any genre. Their lyrics are very much influenced by the French philosopher Georges Batailles IIRC and when I mentioned psychedelics earlier I wasn't kidding. A liner note of one of their EP's mention "the conjunction of intellect in psychotropic-altered senses supported by insisted and archaic sounds" so I speculate they've had heavy entheogenic experiences, but of a much more sinister, nefarious, straight evil nature.
Analyzing their lyrics is very intellectually stimulating and at times more fun than listening to the music itself. Another thing that I dig about them is the sheer mystery surrounding them. No concrete info on them/the members, just rumors.
We may thus conclude that
Deathspell Omega = best musical group from France = best black metal band ever (I mean, c'mon. You can't get more "black" metal than these guys, considering how often they have probably gazed into the void and been devoured by it) = by extension, best metal band ever = most thought provoking lyrics in metal and arguably any genre of music = most genuinely "evil" musical force out there = some of the most fucked up, complex riffs/chords in metal
I am very much convinced that the members of Deathspell Omega (the drummer and guitarist especially) are T-1000 Series Terminators.
Satanic, psychonautical, classically influenced black metal Terminators.

I like deathspell, but i haven't listened to enough of Blut Aus Nord to form an opinion.
I think there are better black metal bands out their, especially for that ambient kind of black metal. Specifically WITTR. They have such a great almost uplifting sound to them, and they create such a great atmosphere.
I like gorguts, and the band named after their very good album Obscura. If you haven't listened to Obscura I would definitely give them a listen, their second album is my favorite.

For BAN get Memoria Vetusta II: Dialogue With The Stars and Ultima Thule, their best works. The Work Which Transforms God is much more Industrial-oriented and The Mystical Beast of Rebellion is more raw black metal.
As for Wolves In The Throne Room, I've seen 'em live twice, and have had an astral projection experience while on DXM when I saw them live the 2nd time Very, very meditative, emotive, almost shamanic-sounding black metal. Another favorite of mine.
Old pic, but I'm rockin' a WitTR shirt here:

Their old logo >>>>>>>>>>>>> Their new logo
Which album of theirs is your favorite?
As for Obscura, what albums do you recommend?

I really like two hunters from WITTR.
And as for obscura I recommend cosmogenesis.
^One of my favorite songs off that album.
I was really digging that Dso song that you posted, and I am looking forward to listening to Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice because of the chanting and choral stuff.
I kind of disagree with some of the things they say in terms of the interpretations of satanism though, but that doesn't take away from the music at all.

I also completely missed this post.
DUDE
PILGRIMAGE = MY FAVORITE SONG FROM THEM
also the song that makes me want to learn bass so badly.
I ALWAYS just from listening to the song. Just close your eyes and let it take you where it will...
As for the Doom bands I dig (I'm not too keen on stoner doom):
diSEMBOWELMENT, Corrupted (Jpn), Abyssmal Sorrow, Shape of Despair, Thergothon, Nortt, Esoteric, Om, Dusk, Skepticism, Cathedral, Khanate, Sunn O))) etc. I'm more into black/doom, death/doom, funeral doom and drone than stoner.

Have you heard of ISIS sunset? They are definitely worth checking out if we are talking about bands with a heavy kind of stomping progress to them.

I'm very much familiar with Isis but have not given them a really proper listen yet. I always associate them with and always hear them mentioned alongside the band Pelican. Aren't they both post-metalish?

From that song you posted their sound reminds me alot of the band Ensiferum:
Slayer of Light
I expected alot more of a weird Gorguts style but I dig it nonetheless
And which DsO song? The Repellent Scars? A simple mental experiment you can do to that song is to imagine a normal guy, sitting in his room, coming up with that stuff
Si Monumentum Requires Circumspice has a very "orthodox black metal" sound to it, and is not as chaotic or avant-garde as Fas... (which is complete chaos as evidenced by that song) or the last album of the trilogy Paracletus. The best song from SMRC (which includes the Gregorian chanting):
Carnal Malefactor
What have you discerned from their interpretations of Satanism? I really wanted to start a Deathspell Omega lyric analysis thread because it's frankly alot to go through and there isn't a concrete analysis of it. From what I gather, they seem to touch upon the notion that the Logos of this world (Yahweh) is in fact a very malevolent being, having asked assistance from Lucifer to provide a catalyst to the people of this world (a choice, introducing Free Will to the people, in order for people to choose of their own will to return to him. However, it appears that evil has become the dominant force which reigns in this world and the Logos of the Earth is to blame). I think this is what SMRC touches upon.

There wasn't anything in particular about their views on Satanism that I disagreed with so much as this statement that they made:
"all other interpretations of Satan are intellectually invalid"
I didn't really like that band that you posted in response to Obscura. I found their sounds to be quite different. If you listen to Obscura more you will really hear their technicality come through, as well as their awesome bass parts. They have his fretless bass mixed just right in my opinion, as it really shines through on certain tracks.
Here is this other band I have been listening to a lot lately called Tortoise. They are kind of an experiment electronic kinda band. I think you will like them.

I'm half-way through the first song, they have some sexy jazzy drumming going on and the buzzing trumpet is pretty neat
That solo in the second song was surprising.
Here's some experimental electronica I think you'd DEFINITELY appreciate:
(V.E.G.A.) - Oceanica
They are a very interesting band. 3 members, though they live in different countries. Their first album (Cocaine) is VERY schizophrenic sounding, maniacal black metal. Their second album (Alienforest - A Sick Mind's Hologram) incorporates alot of industrial into their black metal and their 3rd album Far From You is pretty... undefineable. It fits no one genre, as you can hear from the above song.
(V.E.G.A.) - 9 Rooms
^ also from Far From You, the first track. The dual meandering guitar riffs in the beginning... so win

I'm giving that first song a listen right now, and it is really good. The guitars have some amazing effects on them or the synth is really good. The drumming is also really nice and not completely what you would expect.
Do you play any instruments Sunset?

Yep. Guitar for 7 years and keyboard for 9 years. The link that says "The mouth of the void is god-wide. The eye of the Creator is void-wide" in my signature leads over to my blogspot for all the music I've made/album downloads and whatnot.
You versed in any instruments dude?
