Acceptable Humidity?
    #1463808 - 04/16/03 02:52 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

Hi all,
I am using a T-Rex thermometer gauage and a t-rex humidity gauge. My temp. is fine, it's usually 25'C or 25'C, rarely sits at 26'C. However, my humidity gauge is constantly at 70...
I have sealed my propagtor well and I have blocked one vent lightly with cotton wool. I am using 2 cm deep of water on the bottom of my propagator...
Is 70 humidity too low to grow the mushrooms with? Or is it fine but cause growth to take longer?
Thanks, Nirvana

T-Rex humidity gauge huh. I'll bet that you bought it at a pet shop, and that it not a digital gauge. I had the exact same problem bro. My temp. was perfect but my RH seemed forever stuck at 80%, even with a 1.5 in. bed of perlite. The problem was not my tech. but instead the shity Zoo Med humidity gauge. I got some advice here at the shroomery and decided to take a trip to the local cigar shop and bought a $25 digital guage (temp/humidity). Sure enough my humidity was at a steady 99% and all that time I was stressin' over nothin'.

ps: I do not mean to say that you NEED a digital hygrow meter, but has worked great for me...definitely worth the money. Good luck.

Thanks alot Perk,
Broswing online for a cheap digital one now and a bag of perlite. You're right, it was a cheap one from a pet store...

if you're just growing cakes on perlite, a humidity gauge is a waste of money.

Thanks for replying all, but will my mushrooms still grow at 70% humidity?
Thanks,
Nirvana

doubtful. if you've got a layer of wet perlite in the bottom, your humidity will be fine.

My pet iguana has perlite about 3 inches deep soaked with h2o/h2o2 and a zoo-med under the tank heater.  With that on he has great temps (Esp with the extra purchase of a thermostat for the heater) and 99.9% humidity.  He actually destroyed a digital humidity gauge due to the high humidity  I'll pick him up a good one at a cigar store.

if you dont have cash to fork out, then you can calibrate your hygrometer.  take a bottle cap full of table salt and drip in a drop or two of water and seal inside a ziploc overnight-by morning it should read 75% exacly.  my digi was 74% so it works, and it cost 25$can.  but whatever yours does say, then subtract or add the difference and add/subtract that number to your gauge everytime you look at it.
