the only thing that i have noticed about shaking pans is that you have to get the moisture content perfect by perfect i mean as best as you can for this kind of mycelium
cubes are more forgiving ,pans a little to wet or to dry and its slow thing down and it looks like it has stalled
bacteria could be the other problem i guess

You're right, and weak spawn makes it even more likely. I had 2 out of 10 quarts of shaken Panaeolus cyanescens not completely recover, but 6 out of 10 quarts of Panaeolus suphanburi/cambodginiensis die after shaking, with the other 4 not completely recovering.

The suphanburi/cambo's were from old prints, though, and grew very slow and weak on agar, and similarly slow and weak on the spawn. The pan cyans, though, were very aggressive on agar and rye, and from new prints.

Cool.  It sounds like you have some good genes there!

Onward and upward,

JD

I haven't used WBS, but with grain, the moisture was definitely an issue. The "wetter" jars didn't colonize as well, or so it seemed. Also, it's good to put some time into getting a method down for drying your rye berries. I found that, after having some non-growth due to excess moisture, that by being creative (shaking the boiled rye berries in a giant pot [the pressure cooker with no lid on] to get as much steam off as possible) I could get better results. This is above and beyond just using a colander.

Thanks man! They are good genes for sure. Original print came from Stonesun, so who knows what its history is, but it's probably good.

There's some good research on pans coming together from you guys, that's great

Awesome! Monotubs are so easy.

What I want to try next is doing more depth with a monotub of panaeolus. There is a myth about pans not liking deeper substrates (>1.5"-2"), but this isn't true. The depth should actually be based on surface area. I don't like parroting RR, but in a thread on the subject of Panaeolus substrate depth, RR said that he originally said the 1.5"-2" depth recommendation because people usually grow pans in smaller-surface area trays, and not larger bins and tubs. Accordingly, in a larger bin or tub, you would use deeper depths more akin to traditional cubensis monotubs, at 3"-4".

I actually tried to do a 3.5" depth tub that you guys didn't see photos of, and this was done with the quarts of suphanburi/goliath that I mentioned above (the ones not looking fully recovered from the shaking). Needless to say, this tub didn't take off. Neither did a mini-tub with different manure and similarly weak mycelium from another species (cambodginiensis).

Live and learn. I think that I'll be taking some time off from growing now that I've been able to have some fun. Believe it or not, I actually throw out a lot of the fruits. I trip maybe once or twice a year, and don't sell them, or have any friends that I know that use them. Hahaha.

Thanks captin for the info along with all you other guys that contributed! I'm going to have to be an explorer ad try a deeper sub over a bigger surface area with a traditional cube mono, when I get around to it I will definitely post results.

How many quarts of spawn/substrate did you use?

I think I'm going to go print > agar > grain > horse poo/verm > cased 50/50. What's the ideal substrate and casing depth? Should the temp be around 70?

That would have been an even 1:1 ratio of spawn to 70/30 manure/vermiculite (4 quarts of spawn, 4 quarts of the 70/30), and a casing of 50/50 peat/verm with added safety lime (not actual lime... check out home depot, they should have it).

I would try a larger depth, if I were you. Supposedly, pan substrate depths are based on surface area, so tubs like the ones in this thread would use around a 3.5" substrate depth.

Hope this helps!
