How much sclerotia?
    #1455521 - 04/13/03 08:30 PM (20 years, 11 months ago)

if a person makes up 8 quart jars of about 3:1 rye grass seed to brown rice mix, putting 2.5 cups in each jar, then inoculates the jars with P. mexicana 'a' strain, how much sclerotia might be expected?

I believe that the mexicana sclerotia forming strain has about a 30% biological efficiency, so, that kind of depends on the weight of your substrate. Of course, this is the hopeful number, you may want to expect a little less until you perfect you method.

all of my donkey's quart jars formed about 1 oz dry worth of sclerotia (per quart jar) he likes sclerotia alot because they dont lose as much water and they taste nutty (many good recipes). only bitch is the 3 moth wait. does anyone kno any good brand name rye grass seed brands that one could pick up and where? what are the things to look for when buying some? last time all the grass seed was donated to my donkey and hes wondering where they all got it from other then online.

All the rye grass seed I see around is treated with nasty chemicals. You would need to find some organic grass seed dealer I suppose. I guess thats not much help...

Hmm....no.

Workman reports 266.4% biological efficiency in one of his grows.

That depends on your definition of biological efficiency. I prefer the easy to understand 30% number myself.

30% of the dry weight of substrate is converted into dry weight of sclerotia in 3 months at 75F.

The 266.4% number is dry weight of substrate to wet weight of sclerotia. Wet weight measurements of biological efficiency are more appropriate for edible mushrooms sold fresh and is less useful for "medicinal" mushrooms when dosage is more important.

Perhaps 'biological efficiency' was the wrong term to use...
But yeah, I meant 30% of the substrate's dry weight.

>That depends on your definition of biological efficiency.

Well, there is one common definition of "biological efficiency" in mushroom cultivation, namely the button mushroom industry one.

But yes, "30% of the dry weight of substrate is converted into dry weight of sclerotia in 3 months at 75F" is easier to understand if you don?t know the definition of the so called "biological efficiency"( which isn?t a "true" efficiency after all....but that?s another story....)

Another of industries contributions, erroneous nomenclature, drives me nuts how often industrial terms lose their scientific meaning or take on another meaning altogether.Good luck Anno  WR

So whats the answer to his question? Is 28g an average result for a quart jar with mex a strain? Assuming he uses at least 100g of dry rye grass seed...he could yeild 30g dry stone. Is this a high yeild or the norm?

how do the p.tamps differ in grow time, reliability, and overall quality?

I'd say its probably a high average but easily achieved. The main problem would be if the substrate doesn't have enough moisture and sclerotia formation is inhibited.

Tampanensis takes twice as long for half the yield. So expect 15 dry grams in 6 months. Quality is good, reliability is fair.

Is Tampanensis sclerotia more potent?

Workman, do you think this is a characteristic of the species. Or do you think that with some mycological know how and effort, faster maturing, higher yielding isolates can be found?

I don't think it is necessarily a characteristic of the species but we are working with a very limited gene pool. Right now there isn't much that can be done to improve the strain through selection.

Someone needs to find some wild specimens to add some variability to the tampanensis genome.

Tampanensis has been dude's favorite species to play with for a while now (and mine to observe).  In fact, I would be willing to pay $150 for a wild tamp print.  Hopefully, it's single appearance wasn't along the same lines as spotting the monster in Lochness.
