Calocybe gambosa? (and others).
    #14428983 - 05/10/11 09:23 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Species 1 (Calocybe Gambosa?)

Habitat:
Peak District, UK. Limestone area.

Gills:

Stem:

Thick, 4cm long and about 2.5cm wide.

These were growing in a group, I only picked one to get an ID, I will go and pick the rest later perhaps.

Species 2 and 3 (Coprinus Micaceus?)

Habitat:
Peak District, UK.

Stem:

White and Hollow, 6cm long and about 1cm wide.

Species 4 (Calocybe Gambosa?)

Habitat:
Peak District, UK.

Also next to the first hay pile on the ground were these:

This is how I found them, they had been turned over, they looked fresh though.

I went out specifically looking for Calocybe Gambosa so I hope I've found some.

Your coprinopsis species is not c. micaceus, but it's close. C. micaceus exclusively grows on decaying wood, in my experience.

Your calocybe gambosa (St. George's Mushroom) looks like the real deal! I was reading about this species the other day in Roger Phillips' Wild Food; he used them to make an apparently excellent quiche. Pick up a copy of that book if you haven't already; it's a great resource and a lot of fun to leaf through, especially if you live in the UK!

/edit: #4 are too young to tell what they are. I wouldn't eat those.

First ones are Calocybe gambosa!
I'm not sure those are Coprinellus micaceus, certainly something coprinoid.
I don't think last ones are C. gambosa. It's difficult to tell, but it may be an Agaricus sp.

I feel quite pleased with myself because I spent the last few days researching Calocybe Gambosa and planned a route today that I thought would most likely lead me to some, I waited until today to go searching because I thought that the weather has been ideal. I'm going to go back out in a bit to collect the rest.

I didn't find any panaeolus species today but I still have one more big hay pile to check out, last time I checked it out I found this: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/14257895

I was thinking Coprinopsis lagopus for the Coprinoid.

I went back out this evening to collect the ones I left behind.

Habitat picture:

You can see the ring in these pictures:

Taken from the field next to it:

Found on the way home (Polyporus Squamosus):

I checked out the hay pile where I found my pan before but it didn't have much in it today:

What I took home:

Some people put it in the top 3 edible mushrooms.
I don't know about that, but it's really really good! Certainly much better than morells that are the only other thing to pop up at the same time here.

Nice gambosa's you have there. Inspiration indeed.

Species 4 screams Argaricus arvensis (Horse Mushroom) to me, but yea, a bit young. Did you go back and check these? arvensis are tasty too.

I thought they were Argaricus Arvensis, I haven't checked back at the site yet but I've got a few hunts planned for the next 5 days or so and with the rain we've been getting I remain hopeful
