Help with my new vid card/PSU
    #14620378 - 06/16/11 12:10 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

OK  well I hope you guys can give some advice...

I got all my stuff today and I hooked all of it up... Vid card is XFX Radeon HD 4850 and the PSU I put in is 530w... the power supply I know is fine because after the full install and the damn thing failing to boot up I took out the vid card and now I am on using the integrated vid again... any tips you might have about the vid card install? I first tried it with the four pin connectors that came with the card and it didnt work then I tried with the six pin connector supplied with the PSU cutting out the 2 four pins and that didnt work either...

Also the first time I powered up after the initial install i heard my sound but the other times i didnt.... I found out that this was because it was bringing up an error screen saying new hardware was installed and asked if i wanted to run a disk check or boot normally...(I found all this out once I booted with my original integrated video)....

failing to boot up

Please explain this in a bit more detail: did the machine get past POST? Was there hdd activity for some time after the screen went black, suggesting that the OS was booting? Can you boot in safe mode (assuming you use Windows)? The more detail, the better we'll be able to help you.

Given the symptoms you describe, it seems to me that a driver issue is the most likely cause of your problems. Try downloading the latest Radeon driver (using your onboard video card) and run the install program. Once finished, power down the machine and install the Radeon gfx card. Then start again and see if it's detected properly. It's also possible that the driver has already been installed correctly, but the video card switches to a screen resolution that is not supported by your monitor. This is a bit unlikely however, as most drivers query the monitor for their supported modes and then select a mode that is within their range. What sort of monitor are you using, and what is its maximum resolution?

yes I'm having this same issue, or maybe I'm not. I just got my hd 4670 graphics card in the mail. in the instructions it says to uninstall the old drivers, but I have windows 7, doesn't windows 7 include a generic driver?

well, I'm about to find out. question is, if I uninstall the old drivers, and then put the video card in, and boot up, won't it not boot and give me blue screen error because the video card driver is uninstalled? I have the driver cd here btw. THANKS

man i cant be for sure because I had to call in help from a friend of mine who knew what the hell he was doing... I also have windows 7 and it sure didnt work out for me until I had someone else do it... but about taking out the old drivers first.... When I did this my new vid card got my PC to boot up it just didnt work properly until all the old drivers and hidden files to the old drivers were removed...

The generic driver is likely to work, but offer abysmal performance. I recommend installing the latest version of the driver the GFX card manufacturer supplies.

No, it will work because of one of the generic Windows drivers, but the resolution & color depth options will be severely limited as well as application performance.

Refer for uninstallation of the present drivers to the manufacturer of your current (old) gfx card.
