anyone think command line is easier to use then gui?
    #14619624 - 06/15/11 09:01 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I mean, with command line, obviously things are going to take longer to find and implement because you have to type every single thing out. but when you try and perform a task on the gui, you won't always know why it doesn't work if the task you try and implement doesn't work. you won't know if it's taking awhile, or if you did it wrong, or if there is a virus.

with the command line, when you enter a command, it'll either enter the command, or it'll give you a response that it didn't work and tell you why. to me command line is only a pain in the ass if the command you are trying to enter doesn't work, and you missed a step, and don't know it, or if you don't know how the command you are using works, and you type it incorrectly.

the key to solving this is doing the same task repetitively. same with the guy, the key to understanding it is doing the same task repetitively, but with the gui, if you have a computer with a virus, it doesn't matter how many times you have seen a virus. I mean you'll know something is wrong. but you'll go through the task of first restarting in safe mode and running security essentials and malware bytes then c cleaner. then if that doesn't work putting in the windows disk and trying to repair the volume. then if that doesn't work backing up the data and then reinstalling windows and the data.

I don't know, to me cmd just seems so much simpler. then again, maybe I'm looking at this all from the wrong angle. but that is why people say using linux is so much simpler. it's so command line interactive, and it's GOT to be easier to diagnose that way. even though linux rarely gets a virus unless it's a very specified attack. oh well

Actually, I find the command line much faster to use than the GUI in most cases.  That's why I use it for most tasks.

The main reason I prefer the CLI to a GUI is it's scripting implications.

For instance I have third party program for overclocking my GPU. Unfortunately this program was written GUI exlusive and takes no parameters, therefore each time I want overclock my GPU I have to:

  • Open the program
  • Click my setting
  • Cick apply

Sounds simple enough but it's an inconvenience.

If the program was written with the CLI in mind however I could write a script to invoke a command like: "program.exe -oc myprofile". I could then bind my script to one of the command keys on my keyboard. So then it could be C1:Default, C2:Underclock, C1:Overclock and so on and so forth.

Of course I could jump through the fifty thousand hoops and write an API hook for the application manually but why should I spend weeks reverse engineering a piece of software to add functionality that should be been included in the first place.

Depends on what I'm doing, really. Do I choose the hammer for this job or do I need a hacksaw?

good point.

still with os like linux you can use the hacksaw or the hammer. having the option for either is nicer. like you said, one tool works better in different circumstances.

Yeah, often it's down to personal preference. I prefer a good-working gui if it's available and the task is recurring.

the reason unix based OS are so popular among administrators is the quickness in getting things down. u can move every file with a .jpg extension from ur home directory to /www with a quick:
mv ~/*.jpg /www

to move a ton of jpg's it would take a lot more resources/ram and also more time doing it using GUI.'

command line owns everything. I mean how many times as your shell crashed? I love *NIX :inlove3:

Agreed.

95% of the applications i use daily are text based but there are somethings where the gui is king.

You can. Just write it into a .bat file and do Start -> Run and type it in. Admittedly not as nice as Linux, but there.

I don't know how the Windows CLI works but if it has even a small amount of sanity to it there should be a way to specify a script to run at boot.

In Linux, if you want to run a command/script at boot you just add it to /etc/rc.local

I'd hope there is an equivalent in Windows.

You shouldn't need to click anything like that at boot.. thats stupid.

Of course there is. Back in the old (DOS) days, you would include a reference to it in autoexec.bat, but nowadays, you can simply include a shortcut in the Programs->Startup folder in the Start menu, or include a reference directly in the registry.
