  • 1859:  Arthur Heffter is born

Quote:

Arthur Heffter
Jun 15, 1859
- Feb 8, 1925

Summary

Karl Wilhelm Arthur Heffter identified mescaline as the active principle in the peyote cactus. He was a leader during the classical period of Pharmacology, was the first chairman of the German Society of Pharmacologists, and was largely responsible for the first Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology.

Born in Leipzig Germany, on June 15, 1859, Heffter studied chemistry in Freiburg, Leipzig, and finally at Greifswald. After receiving his Ph.D. (1883) with a dissertation titled 'Some new sulfur compounds derived from p-toluidine', he assisted O. Nasse, a pharmacologist and physiological chemist (1884-1886) and studied medicine at the Pharmacological Institute at Leipzig. He also worked in the laboratory of Rudolph Böhm, where he discovered choralose.

After receiving his M.D. degree and doctorate in pharmacology at Leipzig in 1890, Heffter did seminal work on alkaloids derived from the peyote cactus (Lophophora williamsii, which was then called Anhalonium williamsii) (1888). He was the first to gain the title of "psychonaut", because of his willingness to test on himself (bioassay) the chemicals he isolated. He was given the name by Ernst Jünger in his logbook of personal drug experimentation Annäherungen: Drogen und Rausch (Drugs and Inebriation). It would be nearly 50 years before the Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann would discover the effects of LSD.

Heffter became a full professor at Leipzig in 1896. In 1898 he Left Leipzig to take over as Chairman of the physiological-pharmacological branch of the State Health Office. He soon moved to the University of Bern as Professor of Medical Chemistry and Pharmacology. In 1908 he moved to Berlin to fill Liebreich's Chair, where he would spend the next 16 years in a top research position of the German empire. (Heffter.org)

  • 1966:  Daniel Pinchbeck is born

Quote:

Daniel Pinchbeck (born June 15, 1966) is an author living in New York’s East Village, where he is editorial director of Reality Sandwich, a blog website centered around New Age philosophy and activism.  He is the author of Breaking Open the Head: A Psychedelic Journey into the Heart of Contemporary Shamanism and 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl. He is the son of painter Peter Pinchbeck and writer Joyce Johnson.

Ideas

Pinchbeck has deep personal roots in the New York counterculture of the 1950s and 1960s. His father was an abstract painter, and his mother, Joyce Johnson, was a member of the Beat Generation and dated Jack Kerouac as On the Road hit the bestseller lists in 1957 (chronicled in Johnson’s bestselling book, Minor Characters: A Beat Memoir). Pinchbeck was a founder of the 1990s literary magazine Open City with fellow writers Thomas Beller and Robert Bingham. He has written for many publications, including Esquire, The New York Times Magazine, The Village Voice, and Rolling Stone. In 1994, prior to his interest in psychedelics, he was chosen by The New York Times Magazine as one of “Thirty Under Thirty” destined to change our culture through his work with Open City, a literary journal,.

In Breaking Open the Head, Pinchbeck explored shamanism via ceremonies with tribal groups such as the Bwiti of Gabon, who eat iboga, and the Secoya people in the Ecuadorean Amazon, who take ayahuasca in their ceremonies. He also attended the Burning Man festival in Nevada, and looked at use of psychedelic substances in a de-sacralized modern context. Through his direct experiences and research, and philosophically influenced by the work of anthroposophist Rudolf Steiner he became convinced that the shamanic and mystical view of reality had validity, and that the modern world had forfeited an understanding of intuitive aspects of being in its pursuit of rational materialism.

Drawing heavily, and somewhat controversially, from material shared on the Breaking Open the Head web boards, Pinchbeck's second volume 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl, follows Pinchbeck's travels and travails as he responds to leads, both physical and intellectual, he receives via this forum. Examining the nature of prophecy Pinchbeck investigates the New Age hypothesis of Terence McKenna that humanity is experiencing an accelerated process of global consciousness transformation, leading to a new realization of time and space during this period. Detailing the psi or extra-sensory perception research of Dean Radin, the theories of Graham Hancock, the phenomena of crop circles, and a visit to calendar reform advocate José Argüelles, Pinchbeck concludes with his alleged direct reception of prophetic material, a claim that was enough to get the book dropped by its planned publisher, delaying its release for the greater part of a year. Pinchbeck alleges the voice of the Mesoamerican deity Quetzalcoatl began speaking to him during a 2004 trip to the Amazon in Brazil, though he has since become reticent over any further communications he may have received. At the time, he was traveling by boat on the Amazon between participation in ceremonies of the Santo Daime, a Brazilian religion that uses the psychedelic brew ayahuasca as its sacrament. Through its references to 2012 and the Maya calendar in the context of New Age beliefs, Pinchbeck's book has contributed to Mayanism.

Pinchbeck's feature articles have appeared in various periodicals. A founding editor of, but no longer a contributor to, Open City, a literary journal, in March 2007 he launched a new Internet-based magazine, Reality Sandwich, claiming to offer "a new paradigm for a planetary culture." He is the executive producer of PostModernTimes, a series of web videos presented on the iClips Network and co-founder of Evolver, an online social network.

Appearances and Interviews

On December 14, 2006, Pinchbeck appeared on the television program The Colbert Report to discuss his book 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl.

Pinchbeck was featured in the 2006 film Entheogen: Awakening the Divine Within, a documentary about rediscovering an enchanted cosmos in the modern world.

Pinchbeck was also featured in the film 2012: Science or Superstition, a documentary describing how much of what we are hearing is science and how much is superstition.

Furthermore he interviewed Alejandro Jodorowsky for the German/French art television Arte in a very personal discussion, spending a night together in France, continuing the interview in different locations like in a park and in a hotel.

Pinchbeck appears in the Reality Sandwich sponsored feature-length documentary film 2012: Time for Change directed by Joao Amorim, which was released in October, 2010.

  • 2001:  Nick Sand is released from prison

Quote:

Nicholas Sand (born Nicholas Francis Hiskey; May 10, 1941 – April 24, 2017) was a cult figure known in the psychedelic community for his work as a clandestine chemist from 1966 to 1996 for the Brotherhood of Eternal Love. Sand was part of the League for Spiritual Discovery at the Millbrook estate in New York, has been credited as the "first underground chemist on record to have synthesized DMT" and is known for manufacturing large amounts of LSD.

Prosecution

In 1972 Sand was prosecuted along with several members of the Brotherhood for the manufacturing of LSD, who had been the focus of a lengthy investigation by federal narcotics agents in the early 1970s.  In 1976 Sand was found guilty partially due to the testimony of Billy Hitchcock and other "snitches" and was sentenced to 15 years in a federal penitentiary.

Sand's attorney appealed his conviction, based on the fact that Sand never produced LSD-25, but a similar substance called ALD-52, which was not illegal at the time.  Sand was released on $50,000 bail and while out of custody, went underground in 1976 and remained a fugitive from federal agents for two decades.

Resurfacing

In September 1996, Sand surfaced as a drug suspect in Vancouver, British Columbia. According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, he was living under the name David Roy Shepard and his true identity was not discovered until his fingerprints were sent to the FBI lab in Washington, D.C. nearly two months after his arrest.  The RCMP says Sand was one of seven people who were operating one of the largest LSD labs in North American history, a facility near Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, that produced enough acid to dose every man, woman and child in Canada 1.5 times.

Sand served prison time in Canada and the United States from 1996 to 2000 for the manufacture of psychedelic drugs including, but not limited to, MDMA, MDA, DMT, LSD, and mescaline. He also produced an analog of LSD known as lysergic acid sec-butylamide (LSB). Sand was sentenced to nine years in Canada but was returned to the United States as he was still living underground due to charges of LSD production from the early 1970s. Nicholas Sand is credited with the largest poly-drug clandestine laboratory to be encountered in Canada.[citation needed] His laboratory was secreted in an industrial complex in a suburb of Vancouver, British Columbia. His lab was of a level of sophistication never encountered before by police investigators or clandestine lab specialists from Health Canada. Sand worked in his lab several months each summer and resided in Mexico for the rest of the year. For 1995, he estimated a net income of 1.8 million dollars for three months of work. The substances produced in his lab were destined for a worldwide market, and also included MDP-2-P or piperonyl methyl ketone (an MDMA precursor), which was quite rare in Canada at the time.

As of 2001, Sand is on a monitored release program and resides in San Francisco, California. He is writing a book and practicing Buddhism.

Nice.  Thanks, Learyfan.

I've read two of Pinchbeck's books.  One is a paperback - Breaking Open the Head, and one I have as an E-book - The Return of Quetzalcoatl.  As between the two, Breaking Open the Head is the better one, IMHO.  Much more interesting and a lot less "fringe" thinking/writing.

N.B.

Yeah was also thinking about that the other day. He discussed much of his life and the times he spent incarcerated. Nick Sand interview online, which was actually pretty awesome. Shoulda dosed...almost dosed. Im a fan after listening to the entire thing. (I found on on this board somewhere if anyones interested) It's almost 2hours long if i remember correctly but so worth it. May listen again as pre trip ritual, or something weird like that. Or Mckenna's interview(s), just the guys voice trips me out though.
