Brand new cultivator
    #14599398 - 06/12/11 03:39 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Hello all. I just got into the growing game about a month ago. Just wanted to share my experience thus far and introduce myself. I started with 12 jars. Most colonized within about 25 days. There was one jar that did not colonize at all at any of the inoculation points. I found that strange.

I wasn't seeing anything from the first round of cakes I birthed, however I didn't know to wait a week after colonization so I did birth them early. The next 2 that colonized I did wait the week on and I placed them in the FC a couple days ago. I was starting to worry about the ones I birthed early because I was getting no action at all. But yesterday I peeked in to see (to my delight) one tiny sprout, about 1/4 inch long on top of one of my cakes. Then today when I checked it was like a damn festival in there. There were pins everywhere! Some were like 1/2 inch or longer! I'll tell you I was like a giddy schoolgirl at this point. What a great feeling.

Now I'll explain my setup a bit and then I have some basic questions. I have a 64 qt tub with perlite covering the bottom, just a few inches. I didn't have foil like I thought I did so I substituted saran wrap. I also installed an air pump with an air stone that goes to a jar of water in the middle of the chamber. I know this is kind of mixing techs but I wanted as much humidity and FAE as I could get when left alone. The humidity is a solid 99% at all times without misting. The water does evaporate rapidly and I have to add some almost every day. I did notice water droplets appeared on the cakes if I didn't fan. And there are tiny water droplets all on the saran wrap even with fanning.

My questions are:

1.) Has anyone had a jar that did not colonize at all at any of the inoc points? It didn't even start to colonize at all!

2.) Has anyone tried this setup with an air pump and perlite layer? I haven't seen too much info on this, but it seems to keep the humidity steady.

3.) Is there any reason why the saran wrap would be a bad idea? I tried to look for info on this too, but didn't find any.

4.)  Also I found that some pins are forming ON the saran wrap, without even touching the cakes. Do you think these will survive without direct contact with the substrate? Have any of you seen this type of thing before?

5.) Lastly, will the droplets of water on the saran wrap be detrimental to my growths? They seem to be growing fine now, but I've read standing water is not good for them.

Thanks for reading and answering my questions. I really appreciate all the info everyone has put on here. I may never have been able to attempt this hobby if it weren't for the info I researched on this wonderful site!

1.yes

2. I haven't but im sure someone has.

3.I can't think of any reasons why the saran wrap is bad, but do you want to be the guy
who finds out the hard way? Get foil, or use the lid from the jar they grew in.

4.Take pics

5.Drops are fine, as they should evaporate rather quickly. Pools of water not so good.

Kudos to you for laying all questions out clearly!

Okay here are the pics I took. However, my phone went through the washing machine and still works, but it effed up the camera lol. So there are some lines and whatnot in some (pretty good for going through the washer!)

This is the first sprout I got. Those in the background were just dunked and rolled a couple days ago:

This is another cake with growth on top. In the background you can see the water on the saran wrap and the sides of the terrarium.

This is the whole terrarium. Couldn't really get a good pic. There is so much room on the one side because I have two more cakes that haven't completely colonized yet.

And this is the biggest little fella I have so far. Looks like he even had a baby! I named him Magnus! = P
But you can clearly see the water droplets in this pic. The cakes themselves look moist but not water logged or soggy. He is laying on the saran wrap though.

Okay finally fixed a problem with my gf's digital camera so I now can take far better pics.

This is my first sprout just the second day after that last picture:

This is the cluster in that second pic above:

Some of the larger ones:

And this is Magnus just two days later:

This is a new cluster that popped up out of nowhere. Looks pretty cool:

And the terrarium shot:

Now these look like they're growing good to me, but what do I know? What do you guys think?

I have my first Jars going right now. They were all started on the 6th I have some going on wbs and all of those are growing nice. I also have some going on brf. Some are growing nice and others are doing nothing. But I fear that some are not going to produce like the one you had. I wonder if some spores are just bunk. Because I did them all the same. same amout of spore solution and all. Maybe I am just jumping the gun. time will tell. Anyway, nice grow man... Hope mine turns out this good..

Plastic isn't good for keeping shrooms, so it's probably not the best for growing.

It seems like it would hold too much moisture under the cakes and invite contams, but if it's workin for you, why fuck with it.

How is your FAE?  Skinny shrooms are a sign of not enough.

How thick should they be? I know they aren't fat, but they don't look skinny to me. Not all of them anyway. And I've read that lighting might make skinnier shrooms, and my lighting is just a closet light for right now.

More Pics; I've already picked a bunch so these are what's left:

This one is big, but he was the first sprout and I think he's done growing. Should I just pick him?

And the terrarium:

I think a lot of these are aborts. Should I pick the ones that have a darker cap or what?

Well I didn't think this big guy was growing anymore, but I woke up today and the veil was broken and everything:

He got pretty huge compared to a lot of them. He was the first one I noticed growing and one of the last to fully mature. Took about seven days.

And then there's these:

Seems that the newer cakes are coming along slowly. Not sure why. I put more air holes in my terrarium. I think that was part of the problem. Added a proper light. Humidity is steady at 99% all the time. I only spray if a cake looks somewhat dry.

I just dunked the cakes that were done first so we'll see how the second flushes go I guess. Still have one cake that just got done colonizing and I'll be introducing mid next week.

By the way, the one jar I had that had shown absolutely no sign of colonizing for over a month I ended up flipping it upside down (read on some thread about this) and in a few days it has begun to colonize. Just a simple flip!

Thanks guys! Very happy to stumble upon this great site before I actually attempted to grow. It made it much easier than my original planning.

This weekend I got to trip off of my own shrooms for the first time. It felt so good. A friend and my girlfriend joined me, and we all had a relaxing, mellow trip.

Today I inoculated my first jar of substrate with my own spore solution that I made from a spore print. It's just a test, so if it goes well I will do more jars. And next I'm going to try my hand at cloning.

It's like every week there is something new and exciting to do! = P
