Psilocybin mushroom?
#14613885 - 06/14/11 07:13 PM (12 years, 9 months ago) |

So i was at my uncles and he has allot of cow manure pilled up in the fields from his cattle and i found these mushrooms, they look like Psilocybin mushrooms but i am not exactly sure if they are. i live in northern Virginia.
the stem was white when i picked it and turned darker through out the day
Cap: Whitish yellow, some had a faint bluish ring around the bottom but not all of them did. Some had a tint of tanish yellow.
Gills: Very dark purple or black
Stem: white in color, lengthy and skinny
they looked similar to this at the site the difference was the nipple isn't as pronounced and the cap its self doesn't droop down as much

Liberty caps don't grow in cow manure, they don't grow in Virginia and they don't grow in June.

Definitely nothing psychoactive but other than that, hard to pinpoint to a species given the poor quality of both the specimens and the photographs.

If I had to guess, I'd guess Lacrymaria lacrymabunda or maybe an Agrocybe species.
You won't get a definitive answer from anybody, though.

i looked up both of the ones you suggested but they don't match. Its kind of the underside of the first one you mentioned with the caps of the second only in a smaller shape
the gills under the cap are a very dark purplish color really just looks black and the color in the gills hasn't changed since i picked it.

Well unfortunately, only you will be able to tell which ones match and which ones don't because the mushrooms are unrecognisable in that state.
Then again, you thought they looked like Psilocybe semilanceata and they don't. At all. So I'm not sure what to suggest, really. I reckon you should pick some more tomorrow and bring them home more carefully.
Don't expect them to be psychoactive though, because they're not.
Hope this helps.

From the habitat, the time of year and the general look. There is no obvious way. There is no shortcut. You need to learn your different mushrooms and after a while, you will be able to tell.

Not even being from Virginia, I know:
1. What psychoactive mushrooms grow in your area 2. What they look like 3. In what habitats they grow
They look nothing like the coprophilic psychoactive species that grow near you.

Not true. And I wouldn't give him false hope that eating hundreds of these will make him trip, because he wouldn't trip if he ate a million.

You just showed me some pictures of Psilocybe semilanceata -- a species that neither grows in cow droppings NOR at this time of year.
Also, your friend's uncle used to hunt "them"? What's "them"? There are loads of different species of psychoactive, all with different characteristics, habitat preferences and growing times.

Unless you live near the coast, looking in cow poo is probably not going to be fruitful in Virginia (Psilocybe cubensis is reported as a rare species, growing only near the coast).
You'd be better off looking in horse poo for Panaeolus cinctulus.

I suggest you don't eat anything you find, because you don't have a clue what you're doing, you think you've found mushrooms that you haven't, you won't take a telling and you can't be bothered to learn. You're the sort of person who kills themself.

Jesus. If you're gonna bring some home that are in a good enough condition to eat, then photograph them and post them on here whilst you're at it so we can tell you what they are.

Yes, buy a field guide. I'm not sure what the best one for your area is.

i agree most people dont listen to what others have to say they get in there mindset and think they are right gets pretty annoying especially when its the same person asking if all the mushrooms he finds are acvtive but tis pretty easy to determine if it is or not
just look it up type in your area and then psilocybin species of mushrooms should get you somewhere

I'm not sure which psychoactives grow in Virginia but that's what you need to find out first. They you find out their preferred habitat and the months in which they grow. Then you find out everything about their appearance and look at thousands of photos of them. Then you go find them.
