Agar leap
    #14613673 - 06/14/11 06:28 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I decided to make the leap to agar. I took a trip into town and found all the supplies I need to get started. Only thing I couldn't find was petri dishes. Instead I found these nifty collection elite wide mouth half pint mason jars
http://www.cooking.com/products/shprodde.asp?SKU=229661&ref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.findthebestdeals.com%2Fxu0amxhpe_ball_set_of_4_collection_elite_wide_mouth_half_pint_jar
They should work perfectly for agar with the wide mouths and shallow bottoms. I was surprised to learn that the holistic/free range/organic/health store serves a purpose haha. The dextrose, agar, and corn meal were all placed right next to each other :-).

Recently Ive been using the wide mouth 1/2 pints that I started PF tek with. I dont think Im going back to the petri dishes. Seems like there is plenty of air in the jar for the myc. No need for parafilm. No special orders of petri dishes. And when Im done, they go in the dishwasher. No muss, no fuss. Im still trying it out, but so far Im sold on the idea.

Do you have a hole in the lid of your jars with tyvek or poly ?

First time I tried it I had a layer of tyvek on the outside. Tough this time around Im going without any holes/filter on them. Im thinking that for the short amount of time the myc will actually be in the jar, it may be fine. We'll see. If all else fails, maybe Ill loosen the lid. Theres quite a bit more air in the jar compared to a petri.

I just put 4 holes in top and put micropore tape over the holes like a pf tek. I dunno should be enough, I haven't had a contam yet, grain, lc, or pf so tyvek or polyfill shouldn't be needed.

Im thinking of using a small hole with some easy felt for some agar jars. Had problems with no hole in them before, getting too wet inside there. Most likely my own mistake but I shall see.

I think Roadkill tapes his petri dishes with electrical tape. For the short amount of time to make transfers you should might be fine with no holes.

Here's an interesting thread ....
