Ok. you know jumpers where you jump and then try to bring your knees up as high as possible while in midair?
These fucking kill me to begin with but even worse it hurts my hips, like right where the hip ball socket deal is. What should I do before I start jumping?

I would do a warm up. From my experience you should stretch after exercise and warm up before. Go for a light jog, move your body, I like to squat up and down quickly and then do some high knees for the hips.

I agree, also I think jumping rope would be a great warmup for this.
The proper muscle groups to stretch before: I would say all of them, I can't think of a muscle that you wouldn't use. If you notice you are having problems with a certain area, stretch it well. Look up a comprehensive stretch routiene online, I would tell you mine but I don't know the proper terminology, and it would be tedius.
By all means if you are in much discomfort, allow your muscles to rest and recover so as not to strain them. To me, it sounds like you are having issues with your hip joint, which would make sense doing something like this. Make sure you are using proper technique, don't be sloppy. I take joint supplements (glusocamine/chondroiton(sp?) seems to help). Try to do exercises that will build the muscles you need for balance, again I find jumping rope is great for this.
I am in decent shape but these seem like they would be too high-impact for me to do on a regular basis, this kind of thing would kill my bad knee. If you think it may be causing long-term damage, you might wan't to consider something else, or at least develop some sort of cross-training type routiene, where you alternate methods to reduce the impact.

Sounds like your ITB (iliotibial band).
For soccer, we used to always do this stretch. Might wanna try it after your warmup and/or after the workout to see if it helps.

There are other ITB stretches that you can find via Google.

Your Psoas will need a lot of strechting to avoid that strange, untracable abdomen/groin pain that occurs sometimes. Just google 'psoas stretch' and pick your favourite variation. The psoas is the largest flexor in the body, take care of it

Just do Globe Jumps. (Jump in a square shape with your hands touching the ground) I find these to be equally effective and lower impact.
