Genetically modified organisms, are you for or against? State your opinion on them and why.
When I started my course on agricultural engineering I was thinking about specializing in genetics, since I was fascinated about it. Eventually I started having moral issues with genetic manipulation. My course is in standby at this time, but when I get back I'd just like to specialize on ethnobotany and micology if possible.
GMOs are as stated genetically modified organisms, for example they do it a lot on soybean, rice, maize, so that crops can get more resistant to certain plagues or conditions they're prone to suffer.
I personally don't agree with transgenics.

If they can make a crop that grows better with less pesticide, I'm all for it. What scares me is fiddling with bacteria and viruses for military purposes and the like. We could make something very bad indeed.

technology will always be used for good and bad, although I'm not very fond of the idea of humans playing god.

I'm not opposed to the technology, just Monsanto for fucking over farmers and using the terminator gene. I voted Against.

I think some of it is good and some is bad. The terminator gene is fucking scary.
"The terminator gene is a specific genetic sequence inserted into a seed's DNA. Once activated by a synthetic chemical catalyst of the manufacturer's choosing, the sequence renders the seed and crop it produces sterile.
Patented by the USDA and Delta and Pine Land Co., now owned by Monsanto, this terminator technology has no agricultural or economic benefits for farmers or consumers. The only motivation is to protect intellectual property rights, according to owners of the technology.
They claim that it allows them to be able to recover investments on research, and produce profits from their technology, as planters must re-purchase seeds every year. Opponents claim that corporations will only use this to squeeze more money out of dependent farmers, and begin a monopoly of chemically saturated suicide seeds. "

Never heard of that. That's pretty greedy and money grubbing. But then Monsanto is known for that.

It could only be useful if they did something like putting the psylocibin producing gene on a peyote's genome

They may be more resistant to pests and such, but modifying crops genetically also produces unpredictable changes in their genetic make-up.
Therefore everything that used to be known about them in terms of their toxicological properties just ain't necessarily so anymore.

I have to be against it because everything Earth in linked. It one finely tuned machine. We start fucking around with it and theres going to be unforeseen consequences...
Could cause our own extinction. More than likely well become reliant on altering and altering cuz we fuck it up so carry on altering shit trying to fix it...
Its a bad path to go down. Tinkering with shit we barely understand but know is extremely sensative and interlinked. Its pretty much utter stupidity.

yeah, humans playing god, can't be a good thing and the extent they can get this to is what worries me the most.

I have no problem with genetically modified organisms although I may be biased as I'm doing PhD in biomedical science.

Had this hippy looking girl at my school ranting over a loudspeaker about monsanto and how not organic food is the devil. All the while I was watching her while I did homework she drank 3 diet cokes and ate 2 slices of pizza and munching on popcorn.
