Someone mentioned Jackson already. Here's a specific recommendation -
Jackson JS23 Dinky for just $200.00, and that includes a gig bag. A stone basic gig bag, of course, but even so. This much guitar at this price point is almost impossible to better. This guitar will hold its own against a lot of others at twice the price. Some people swear it will go head to head with guitars costing triple or even more its price - check the reviews at musiciansfriend.com. Tough to do much better than a 9.57 out of 10!
As for amps, people will argue for pages over that. Once you get better, you'll want to get a spendy amp. In my opinion, it's nuts to overspend on your first practice amp... it's completely unnecessary and the more you spend on that first beginner's one, the less you'll have later when you want to move up - and you will want to move up!
For a hundred bucks, this Fender Mustang is almost impossible to top (now watch three pages of people jump in and argue with me). Would I want to gig with it? Probably not. But as a learning amp it's got all you need and more. WAY more if you want to delve into the intricacies of the included software, but the software is just a bonus - the amp on its own is worth every penny of the measly hundred bucks it costs. Don't take my word for it - read the user reviews.
So for $300 plus Amazon's inexpensive shipping, you've got a really sweet beginner's setup. I dare anyone here to come up with something better for that price point.

Id like to hear more on this subject, been really getting into the acoustic but want to start getting into more of a rock sound. Im definitely going to snag one of those amps, seems like a great deal. Keep my eyes open for a good deal and once i get a little cash together.

I agree.
It wouldn't be a good choice for actual gigs or a venue or anything like that, but for the price it's an amazing amp. I've got one myself. Bunch of effect presets which you can change and save at your whim, and it has the ability to hook up with usb and import different effects from a computer, although I've never tried this yet.
It's definitely a solid amp for $100, and perfect for starting/ jams.

Don't get a Jackson unless you want to look like a shredder-fag. Develop soulful playing over speed.
Warren Haynes wins over shredderfag.
