You generally either use a filter disc, tyvek, or polyfill.

It is really iffy. Your chances of contamination using just foil/verm are pretty high. I would go to the post office and ask for some tyvek envelopes. Hell, they're free.

I've used foil since the beginning with the additional verm layeron top and have had a few contaminations. I've also had success. I usually notice more success when I'm totally anal about sterility. When you lose 3 months of work to green mold you tend to get anal.

polyfil is the polyester filling used in most pillows and whatnot. you can buy a huge bale of it at a craft store for less than 5 bucks. or just cut open a pillow. it's real easy to do. or you can get tyvek enveloped at the post office. filters are cheap, easy, and essential to succesful grain culture. do it right.

Is tyvek reuseable?

I don't use any of those as a filter I use....
cotton!
Just a little piece of cotton through your hole and tape up the holes you use for innoc points. I know you've already PC'ed but next time give it a try.

A wise man once told me that cotton is very bad. It absorbs moisture so is a threat of contams. I am not too sure though.
