The World's Most Dangerous Peyote!
    #14610643 - 06/14/11 06:35 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

:peyote:

Can you graft Lophophora williamsii onto Opuntia or Cylindropuntia stock? Let's find out!
(With thanks to jokefox, fngbronco, GGTBod and karode13)
This is today's progress, two seedlings became four grafts.
Everything is bagged up now, should know in a few days if any of them took- I'll post either way when I know.

An Opuntia seedling was collected from the wild. They are abundant here, no ethics issues.
Two Loph seedlings were selected based on size and health. Top of one seedling was grafted onto the top of the Opuntia.

Cylindropuntia imbricata, walking stick cholla, with grafted Loph in place:

Roots were grafted face-down onto other Opuntia plants.
I trimmed off budding paddles, seemed like the best way to get an active spot.

You can graft the bottom half of a loph seedling?

They look lined up pretty well. The only one I can't tell on is the back opuntia graft, but it looks like it's inside the ring. Are you supposed to get it touching the ring, or is centering it inside ok?

I can't wait! I'll do one next week just cuz you've inspired me doc! You stab yourself this time? I got some welding gloves from my buddy for those cylindropuntia.

Each plant went into a plastic bag.

I don't know if they need to be centered, or if they can line up on other vessels.
I confess I don't know as much botany as I need to.

But the hardest part for me was getting them the right way up- they kept sticking to my tools.
I had rinsed them off and I think I should have let them dry a bit longer.

At this time, one of the top pieces looks good, the other a little less good.
Both root pieces look shriveled, I doubt they will take. More info later.

Two days later, here's the update.
Hard to take pics, but the Opuntia graft looks green.

And the Cylindropuntia looks ok, maybe.

Root pieces don't look as good to me, but maybe they will get better.

No, not really. It's hard to see in person too.
I'll give them another day or two then open the bags and see if I can get closeups.
But the fact that the grafted babies are still plump and green seems like a positive sign.

That's hard to believe, they're so small....and even if it was while on peyote, I commend your dad for being able to get off haha mushrooms it seems impossible to finish.

Doc I found the same opuntia species at a local hardware store. Gonna go grab on of those and an azure and blue Myrtle and see how they do. Probably graft te tops to the azure and myrtle and the roots to the opuntia and cylindropuntia.

Are they calling it Opuntia polyacantha? I can send them by the box, don't bother buying them.

Grafts don't seem to have taken, I'm calling this a successful failure.

No, but they scabbed onto the stock rather than being sloughed off.

I don't think there's hope for these, but there's hope for my technique. I should be able to do this.
