I wonder if the rings need to touch rather than the cores. I saw a great tek somewhere, but can't find it now. How fast do those opuntia grow? I've got some cylindropuntia in my truck still (in boxes) that are shooting out new growth like they don't realize they're not connected to anything lol. Are both the cacti calloused or just the sides? Maybe increase humidity or try to regraft?

I challenge you to challenge yourself more! When you feel complacent and ready to hang it up, challenge yourself to get over it! If you fail, don't look at it as you didn't succeed, look at it as you would a rock face you're trying to climb. Stand back, wayyyy back, and look at it and plot another path. If you can't find one, shuffle down the way a little, a little change of scenery or a view from a different angle may give you the insight you need.

Both species grow pretty fast.
I'm not going to mess with these individuals any more, and I don't think I'll graft much any time soon.
But I may try some ordinary cactus just to get the technique, I'll post if I do.

It would be cool to have two or three kinds of cholla branches on one plant.

Haha that's a great idea! Have a tree cholla base with jumping cholla and prickly pear branches...that could be a fun toy when drunk! See who can pick the pears without catching a spud!

Found this guide to lining up vascular systems.

That's what I was thinking, but the xylem (or phloem can't remember which is up) seems to be on the outside. At least when I cut my Pedro to get rid of rot it looked like open vessels around the outside, like a ring of arteries per se.

But in the middle the vascular rings don't overlap. I thought that's what it's all about.
