Editing Threads

Theres nothing that pisses me off more than editing threads. Some do it to piss others off, some do it to get rid of inappropriate material, and some do it because they're neat freaks. Either way, this post is a perfect example: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Garden&Number=1455211&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1 Now why would one want to edit every post? No offense to neuro, this is just one of many by other mods also.

I went on an editing spree yesterday myself... probably hit a good 10 posts in the Herb Museum. I assure you it was not malicious in anyway - merely trying to remove broken links to images that could not be fully restored which in turn will save viewers a lot of time by not clicking the links in hopes of seeing an image.
We got a good team of mods, and if they need to edit posts they will - please don't give us crap for keepin' the board in order.. we mean no disrespect

PM neuro and ask him nicely why he did it. You'll probably discover he had a good reason.

[sarcasm] I did it for VERY VERY VERY Malicious reasons!
I hate you and every single one of those people that posted in that thread!
That's my reason and i'm sticking to it! [/sarcasm]
Okay here's the reason:
Before the contest was posted by said user, that user PM'd me asking if it was okay to hold a contest, i said it's okay as long as it doesn't get out of hand and does not take away from the marketplace contests. I thought he probably only wanted to share with the posters of EG(ethnogarden) since it's obvious that it's not nearly as active as other forums.
His pm told me that the users were to answer a question and they'd get "4 or more loph seeds." <--- That was the crux of the PM that i had overlooked. I was more focused on the issue of whether or not to allow it that I neglected to to notice his prize.
Few days later i go into the forum and i notice "loph" as part of a title and i said to myself "shit what dumbass did this" after reading it I said to myself, "wait! I'm the dumbass that allowed this," so i went back to my PMs and noticed that he did specifically indicate that he was going to give away loph seeds.
The first post looked like the winner and the user posting the contest seemed to have declared the first post as the winner, so i edited the contest post to say "A PRIZE" and deleted all the posts after the first post, some of them magically disappeared and others say deleted by neuro, so i edited the ones that said deleted a put a "." for some crazy reason.
I assure you my main concern was for the lawful safety of every individual in that post. And tried to clean it up as much as possible without taking away from the possibility of winning some prize (perhaps not Lopho seeds).
Every post after the winner was really unneccessary and essentially involves them in some sort of shady conspiracy or something flat out illegal, so to help them out i killed their posts hoping they'd just disappear, but instead it left a message.
After that i locked it and left it so the people checking to see if they one could see, then i had planned to move it to the dump after like 2 days but forgot to.
I'll tell openly tell everyone that I don't like editting posts and only do it if asked by the author of the post. Or if it violates laws or grossly violates rules at the shroomery. I'm pretty laxed.

In that case, its ok, but these posts really should be deleted, removed from existance, no record.

like i figured, everything is on the up and up.
the crazy mod/admin shit you have to worry about is the stuff you see no visual record for...

See if I was a mod of this forum I'd edit your post since you have that long ass URL, when all you need to do is use the Instant UBB code that you see under the TXT field when you hit 'new post/reply' ... Saves people with small screens from having to scroll over to read a post.
Like dis:
contest...
Now isn't that SO much better than posting the entire URL:

How much scrolling was involved in that?

the ? automatically inserts a break in my screen, thor.... so there's no scrolling on my screen....
besides, i always have the URL so that people can copy + paste if need be....
for example, i hate when people have links "email me" to their email address because i have no default mail client, so the link won't even open. that's why i have to copy + paste email addresses.

indeed. still brings up mailto: though. which is why copying and pasting text off the browser window still makes me happiest.
thanks though.

>>In that case, its ok, but these posts really should be deleted, removed from existance, no record.
That was my intention in deleteing the individual posts and just restructuring the thread so it could stay unlocked and deleted, but it didn't work, some disappeared with no record others left a pointer saying i del'd them, so instead i editted them and put a "."
My plan was to allow it to stay a couple of days so people could see it and get the gist of the post and so the winner could see it and PM the contest holder for info and his possible prize, after that it would be dumped, but i forgot about it.
But my leaving the post still held it's purpose as you saw it (and caused quite a stir!) and now you know what happened.

Change your screen resolution to 800x640, or whatever the small screen people have to use, then you'll see how annoying it is. Its the same when people post: Fun stuff. Are you against doing this because I pointed it out? Or do you not see the logic in why the BB software includes this option to make things easier and nicer to view?

i was gonna switch down to 800x600 and see how it looked to see if he meant 800 or 640, but it won't be an effective experiment in this thread because of the "waaaaaaaaaa". so i just guessed.
