dry verm layer gone
    #14609260 - 06/13/11 10:18 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I just cracked open some colonized BRF jars, and one of the jars was missing the dry verm layer.  It was just fully colonized over it.  I've never seen this before, just no sign of the verm.  All the other cakes had the verm layer intact.

Is this common?  What causes this?  Is it a sign of possible contams, or were my mycelium just ravenously hungry?  :pizza:

Here's a pic, but my camera is shitty so it's not a very interesting one-

As I see it it just got a little moe air in it and colonized through it. I doubt its a bad thing but I can't really see through the fuzzy pic lol

the dry verm will get colonized if it has the slightest amount of moisture in it.

that moisture obviously comes from either A)outside the jar, not good or B)absorbed from the substrate (just fine at this point in the game)

i mean, its there as a barrier...so...if its gone, and its ready to dunk and roll, its kinda too late to be worrying about it.

just dunk and roll and call it a day.

or, scrape it off, dunk and roll and call it a day.

just matters how paranoid you are.

i had that shit happen on my first cake, and its because i let it colonize for like 5 weeks; no GE port.

Yea, its pretty common, I've had bunches of jars do that, most of them

don't colonize it COMPLETELY, but pretty close. I just run it under tap

water before I dunk it, and gently rub it, if it comes off easily then it

doesn't belong there.

I agree that's what lets grow mushrooms suggests to do rinse gently rub off the excess if you wouldn't rub your eye that hard dont rub the myc that hard. Dunk, roll, you can double end case too both work well for me.

It's fully integrated into the cake, so there's nothing to remove.

I'm already plenty paranoid because I'm trying my first bulk attempt, so I removed it from the other spawn.  I dunked it and will fruit it as a cake.  I have a feeling that my bulk will contam and this cake will be the lone producer of the bunch.  It's the classic ugly duckling story.
