ok, so I'm trying to get my wd smart ware to work, apparently I need to mount an iso?

I downloaded wd smart ware to synch up my backups automatically. but what I got in the folder is THIS:
wd_smartware_iso(unzipped)
wd_smartware_disk_image(zipped)
I have magic iso, but I'm wondering if it only BURNS iso's? I hear I need to mount a virtual drive to get this wd smartware iso to work. apparently all this trouble is supposed to make my back ups easier. if the stupid fucking windows backup wizard worked this shit wouldn't be fucking me.
but I don't know my western digital passport seemed to come in a weird format anyway, when I try dragging and dropping or copying and pasting files into the backup drive, most often it only copies half the file for some reason. I don't know, anyone have a lot of past experience with these external backups?
taking an actual hdd out of a pc, hooking up a usb transfer and powering up the drive, and backing up all the files is so much simpler, as long as you don't bump the hdd. why does everything else have to be such a pain the in ass?
THANKS

are you drag and dropping from magiciso and it's only copying half of the file? perhaps there is a file size limitation to its trial version... anyways, you could try daemon tools lite to mount the iso

i didn't know it was as simple as drag and drop. let me try that out then
ok drag and drop seems to have put the wd unlocker into the magic iso maker application. but now how do I use the wd smart ware? I know I need to have my western digital drive in the usb port, but then what??
THANKS

i don't have any of this software - magiciso, wd smartware, or windows for that matter. however, you probably either want to mount your iso with daemon tools or use magic iso to extract its contents to a folder, and then run its installer... upon completion, you'd run the installed app that's my best guess...
quite often btw, you're incredibly difficult to understand. i'm not sure why this is... is English not your native language?

So why don't you use something like PureSync, which is free for non-commercial use and automatically synchronizes the contents of folders on two locations?
Or, to formulate it more broadly: what are you trying to achieve? Perhaps there's more than one possible solution.

perhaps your drive is formatted with a FAT file system, and has a 4gb file size limitation... you'd want to convert or format the drive in NTFS... to format, you'd just go to my computer, select the drive, right click it... select format, change the file system to NTFS and format.

hey thanks for taking your time for an explanation. that is very easy, but when you reformat all data is erased. but yes reformatting is no problem, right click the drive/folder if it lets you it should have reformat. i appreciate the time you took to explain that though,
(mounting iso's is a pain, and to me reloading to boot from dvd drive with iso disk is also a pain in the ass. i'm sure it's easy enough when you've done it a few times, but it's easier to show someone then explain. I'm just an idiot, but if I ever learn it real well, i'll patent the procedure, and sell books on how to achieve the task and make a fortune )

well, if you don't want to format, but you want to convert your file system to ntfs, you'd have to open a command prompt by clicking the windows button in the bottom left hand corner and type "cmd" (no quotes) in the search box and press enter.
from the command prompt you'd type "convert drive letter: /f:ntfs" (no quotes) where the drive letter is the drive you'd want to convert
so for example, "convert e: /fs:ntfs" (no quotes) would convert your E drive to NTFS filesystem
if i've understood your problem correctly, this should clear up your issue with files copying only half way, as there is a 4gb file size limitation with the FAT file system...
it's unfortunate that you have to use 3rd party software to mount an iso with windows, as it's as simple as double clicking the iso with many operating systems. i don't have any of this software in front of me to guide you through it, but hopefully the software comes with some documentation that you can look at... it really shouldnt be so difficult... with daemon tools lite i know that it creates an icon in your toolbar that you can right click and mount an iso... at which point it will appear in your "my computer" as a drive.
good luck...

The FAT/NTFS thing is not the problem though. If the 4GB FAT32 file system limit were the problem, the OS wouldn't copy just half of a file; it would simply report that there is insufficient space available on the volume to perform the copy operation. Nonetheless, there's practically no reason to use FAT anymore; just use NTFS if you're on Windows.

well, i thought he meant it was only copying half of his files, rather than copying half of a file. it seems to add up with him saying that the drive came in some weird format

yes man i now where cmd is i've used arp and netstat and tracert and ipconfig. i may be computer illiterate, but i'm not THAT computer illerate.
anyway, maybe you didn't read the last post I made, but I fixed the problem, I just said screw wd smart ware and went with pure syn, it's simple and easy and I don't need to mount an iso. anyway, are you telling me that if I want to change the e: drive file system to ntfs without formatting it, I just type
"convert f: fs/ntfs" like that?
and I can reverse by typing "convert f: fs/fat32"?
(my external drive is f: for some reason instead of e:)

ok you gave me the wrong command. luckily I knew the correct command. for me I typed
"convert f: /fs:ntfs"
then it asked me for the drive letter. for a moment i kept typing f: over and over. then I looked it up. the drive label is the drive name and not the drive letter. for me it was wd passport. it was c: I would have had to type "local disk"
worked like a charm. So this saved me space?

no, what i told you first was correct, look up a few posts at mine and compare it to yours, you somehow switched things things around :P but anyways.. the most noteworthy thing is that you'll be able to copy files greater than 4gb in size to the drive.

i see, funny enough I think I have no files like that. what takes up that much space anyway? movies?
with what version of windows did ntfs come out? before that you couldn't have anything on the drive with a file larger then 4 gig?
anyway, that's nice to know, but if we had a whole movie library on here, first I'd have to switch out the 70 gb hdd with the 500 gb one I just bought, not in the mood to do that tonight :p
but now that I have options, everything is working out great. options are always great, as you never know when you might need them in the future.

sure, hd video and iso/dmg files vastly comprise my files that are greater than 4gb in size..
ntfs has been around since the early 90s and windows nt i believe, though for the vast majority of end users i'm pretty sure windows xp... i think i remember upgrading from 98 and it having some gui based conversion to ntfs during the upgrade... has been a long time, so don't quote me on that.

why do they constanty sell external drive like the wd passport and a usb key chain drive and have them installed with fat32? is it easier to transfer files from a pc with ntfs to fat32 then it is to transfer files from a pc with fat32 to ntfs?
it must be, because fat32 is something I constantly see as a file system for external drives or usb 4-8gb drives.
