What is American Corporatism?
    #1460605 - 04/15/03 04:10 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

Is it true that before Fascism was known as such it was called Corperatism, or have I been misinformed?
The article makes no mention of Fascism.

Good question. I've been voting against people who support this stuff for about 20 years, that seems about as effective as pissing in the wind. The best I think we can do at the present is educate people (particularly so called conservatives) that there is a difference between free enterprise and government subsidized enterprise. We also need to get the so called liberals to recognize that whenever you give the government more power for anything in the name of 'good' that power is equally available for 'bad' things and eventually will be used in that manner. More power also translates for more opportunities for corruption. That's my incomplete answer.

I don't know, it's my understanding the Mussolini more or less invented Fascism. Prior to fascism he was socialist, but saw socialism's inherent short commings because it took away the profit incentive. Fascism was a much more pragmatic method of implementing his social engineering schemes.

There is mention of the subject in the footnotes...
"Clearly, the New Deal was the biggest jump forward into corporatism, though this was not fully understood at the time. Many people, both pro and con, misunderstood it as a move towards socialism.?"

"? The final irony of corporatism is that it represents the triumph of the one 20th-Century ideology that is considered so utterly discredited that most educated people don't even bother to learn what it believed about economics: fascism. The exact means by which the end was carried out were very different in Mussolini's Italy, Franco's Spain, Hitler's Germany, or Tojo's Japan, and the manner was occluded by a lot of violence caused by other things, but the fundamental dynamic is the same as here: government assumed responsibility for guaranteeing the flow of material goods by private means after public confidence in the market's ability to do this collapsed. The fascists did it to avert communism. We did it for less desperate reasons, but the idea is similar. (The German and Japanese Nazis were not fascists, strictly speaking, but the core of their economics, separate from their use of plunder, was similar. See my article on what the Nazis were really about.)"
