corpse flower
Biggest flower in the world causing a stink at the Eden Project November 12, 2007 The world’s biggest, smelliest flower is stunning visitors to the Eden Project in Cornwall. The Titan arum, also known as the ‘corpse flower’ because of its pungent smell, flowered on Saturday evening but is expected to wilt in the next day or two. The rare plant, which has been nurtured by Eden horticulturalist Tim Grigg, is on display in the Rainforest Biome and currently stands at 159cm (5ft 3ins).
It has now been pollinated by another Titan arum which flowered last week at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
The female part of the flower is only receptive to pollination on the Titan’s first night of flowering, so on hearing that Kew also had a blossoming Titan, Tim asked if they could quickly send some pollen to Eden.
In the Titan’s native Indonesia, the flower would usually be pollinated by insects but the rarity of the plant in the UK means that Eden and Kew horticulturalists have to resort to artificial methods. Tim used a paint brush tied onto a long stick to reach deep inside the funnel of the Titan, brushing the pollen onto the female part of the flower.
If the pollination is successful, the plant will produce small red berries in six to eight months time.
This is the third Titan arum to flower at Eden. The first was in April 2005. The second Titan surprised everyone by flowering in the midst of a cold February this year. However without another Titan flowering at a similar time there wasn’t any pollen available to pollinate the flower. Tim is hopeful that the pollen from Kew will successfully pollinate this Titan. He said: “This pollen is fresh as Kew’s Titan flowered last week so I think we have got a real chance of producing berries from this plant.”
Although it is a distant relative of the ‘lords and ladies’, a British lily, the Titan is unique in the plant world, a true giant capable of growing to a size of 3m (9ft 10ins).
The Titan arum can be viewed via a webcam on Eden’s website at www.edenproject.com. A time-lapse film of the flowering and wilting will appear on the site at a later date.

Did my other thread inspire this one by any chance.
The Titan arum is one bloom I'd love to see one day.
Thanks for posting. The timelapse should be interesting.

i will go back this evening, just for you and take a pic. i didnt take any cos i live just about next door to the eden project and the place is always swarming with american tourists snapping away with expensive super zoom lenzed macro micro hyper mega cameras asking stuff about robin bloody hood! (no offence if you are american, unless you are in cornwall right now blocking my driveway by squeezing your fat bermuda shirt covered ass into the tiniest rental car you could get!) ps although that sounded like an anti american rant, it wasnt. i love you i really do.

Nah, I'm not American. I hail from the land of the long White cloud, Aotearoa. Also known as New Zealand. I can understand about disliking the whole tourist thing if you're a local as well. Some pictures would be great, I was just pulling your leg before.

Lol another Brit bitter about losing the war joking
That's a bad ass flower! It makes me wonder though, how does it know to smell like rotting flesh?

i wish you had 'smell-a-vision' it put me right of my sandwiches. smells worse than a giant raffelisia and the flies are gathering! dunno how it knows how to stink tho. anymore than honeysuckle knows how to smell sweet or cubensis knows how to taste foul!
@fgbronco...is that you sat in your 'smartcar' blocking my driveway with your entire fat family squeezed into it so the suspention is on the floor? if so, could you turn down the volume of your shirt please, to a more acceptable level for rural cornwall?

Hahaha it'd be like lurch getting into an old Mini Cooper lol. And as the great Ali G says, you don't wanna look like an ass in the country side so you gots to wear camouflage to blend in with the native. Or my favorite when he interviewed Posh spice "so how long have you had the mingin-gitis" hahaha
That is a good point with the sweeter smells. It is pretty crazy that plants can target their pollinators. It's a good thing we spend more to research space than our planet
