pf cakes for oysters? first time non-cube
    #14601504 - 06/12/11 03:09 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

so i just ordered some pink oyster LC syringes, jumped through a couple hoops and got a free blue oyster as well.

BUT, i've never grown non-cubensis before and i was wondering if they could grow on pf cakes.

i understand that not all  mushrooms take to cakes as well as cubes. actually, cubes will take to damn near anything, but anyways, any suggestions?

i figure firstly would be to MAKE MORE LC, obviously. and i'm all over that, i guess i just need help on the substrate factor.

ive been around the pf block, so feel free to throw in any variables.

thanks guys, you're the best.

I concur...

However, if you're going to make pf cakes colonized with oyster myc, you should go one step further and spawn those cakes to pasteurized straw.  Then you go from one dinners worth to several feasts worth, plus additional flushes, for not that much extra work.

Good luck

:woot:

good to know.

im about to start with edibles, especially oyster mushrooms, because theyre pretty easy (as ive heard/read).

the cakes are ideal as a base to get used to the growing conditions these mushrooms need.

maybe supplemented with a bit of sawdust or something, also possible.

what about the taste of oysters coming from plain brf cakes?

WOW! ive only ever worked with BRF cakes and rye berries, so i'll look into straw.

but thanks a TON dudes, its cuz of you that i have hope that i dont have to switch up my ways too much.

i just received my LC syringes today, so i'm off to make some LC jars. soooooooo that'll take a while; the perfect amount of time to research some straw teks!

see you guys on the flip side (with updates!)(and pictures!)

I thought they tasted decent, but yeah I reckon the closer you resemble a natural substrate the better they're gonna taste (ie with some wood in there).  I've never delved into supplementing a brf cake.  I suppose you'd need to adjust the sterilization times.  For sure, oysters are a great place to start for edibles. They're really aggressive and get a substrate colonized quicksmart.  Look into doing a pasteurized straw grow too!  So satisfying when you're (finally) sitting down to that meal of tasty mushrooms.  But like they say, it ain't the destination, it's the journey

Oysters on pasteurized straw work great.  A nice tek is doing a grow in a plastic laundry basket.  Chop your straw up, soak it in warm water with dishwashing liquid for a couple of hrs, pasteurize for 90 mins and layer the straw and spawn into a laundry basket   All the best mate

Even easier, you can bleach/lime pasteurize

The cake on the right is substituted with rice bran in the place of brown rice flour.
