  • 1953:  Time Magazine publishes an article titled "Medicine: Mescaline & the Mad Hatter"

Quote:

Medicine: Mescaline & the Mad Hatter
Monday, July 13, 1953

Like many a researcher before him (including the late great Havelock Ellis), British Psychiatrist John Smythies was fascinated by the extraordinary visions he had after taking mescaline, an alkaloid derived from a Mexican cactus.* Unlike opium and other drugs, which bring on hallucinations, mescaline seems to leave the power of critical observation intact. And what the subject sees, says Dr. Smythies after comparing notes with his friends, are visions of "the utmost poetical integrity."

If the mescaline taker keeps his eyes closed, he sees riotously colorful "mosaics, networks, flowing arabesques, interlaced spirals, wonderful tapestries . . . great butterflies gently moving their wings, fields of glittering jewels . . . soaring architecture . . . and finally human figures and fully formed scenes where coherent histories are enacted."

With his eyes open he can do even better. Says Smythies: a level-headed medical colleague "spent a quarter of an hour gazing at a plain glass full of water and trying to describe to me the perfection of its diamond brilliance." But there are also distortions. The observer may feel his limbs detach themselves from his body and lie on the floor beside him. (Not funny, insists Dr. Smythies.) The room may grow enormously or change shape, the angles becoming alternately acute and obtuse. Time slows down, so that "teatime goes on forever," and the subject "will feel quite literally that he is at the Mad Hatter's tea party."

But Psychiatrist Smythies is not interested merely in Technicolored 3-dementia. Mescaline, he argues, produces the closest known facsimile of the symptoms of schizophrenia. Researchers who gave up looking for a physical cause of schizophrenia quit too soon, he believes, and largely because psychiatrists and biochemists did not get together on mescaline.

Dr. Smythies, 30, has moved to Canada and is working with Dr. Humphry Osmond at the Saskatchewan (mental) Hospital in Weyburn. In the Journal of Mental Science, the two doctors do some close reasoning. Mescaline, they suggest, breaks down in the body; some resulting "M substance" (chemically related to adrenalin) upsets the brain's sugar consumption and brings on split-personality hallucinations. Similarly, perhaps, stress of the type that brings on schizophrenia upsets the adrenals, and they liberate "M substance."

Drs. Osmond and Smythies think it would be worth while to do a lot of chemical and biochemical testing of mescaline and schizophrenics. After that, they say, either their theory will join countless others on the scrap heap of psychiatry or the cause of schizophrenia will be known.

*It is the active ingredient in the brew made by the Navahos from peyote buttons, which medical missionaries condemn (TIME, June 18, 1951), though some anthropologists insist that the stuff is harmless and none of the missionaries' business.

  • 1962:  Myron Stolaroff is sued after LSD user attempts suicide

Quote:

Minister Accused Of Drug Plot Suit Says Man Tried Suicide

SOUTH GATE, Calif.—(AP) —A minister is accused of persuading a parishioner to take a powerful hypnotic drug that allegedly caused him to attempt suicide.
The Rev. Ray Charles Jarman, 67, pastor of the Christian Chapel in nearby Huntington Park, and six other persons are named as defendants in a suit filed yesterday [June 13, 1962] by an usher at the church, Donald a McCollum, 52, of Crestline.
Meanwhile, agents from the State Board of Medical Examiners said they raided the chapel and confiscated vials and pills, which are to be analyzed by a state medical laboratory.
The Rev. Mr. Jarman denied giving the drug—lysergic acid—to anyone. He also denied that the drug was found in the church by state agents.
According to the suit, McCollum tried to kill himself by carbon monoxide poisoning after taking the drug. He was saved by police, the com-plaint alleges, and subsequently received treatment at a mental institution,
The suit contends that the minister told McCollum in 1961 that he was emotionally disturbed and could be cured with lysergic acid, which could be obtained at the Institute for Advanced Study in Menlo Park, Calif.
The drug produced hallucinations, McCollum said, that caused him to reveal "his intimate thoughts, feelings and affairs."
He claimed that he subsequently became ill and despondent, suffering a loss of mental faculties.
State medical agents said lysergic acid is believed to produce uninhibited reactions and to stimulate hallucinations.
Others named in the suit were Myron Stolaroff, president of the institute at Menlo Park; Willis W. Harman, secretary of the institute; three unidentified elders of the Rev. Mr. Jarman's church, and an unidentified Menlo Park physician.
The suit was filed jointly by McCollum and his wife, Margaret, who he said had been a secretary to the minister.
The Rev. Mr. Jarman said he was ordained a minister in Kansas City, Mo., after attending Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Mo., and the University of Chicago.
He resigned as pastor of the Huntington Park Christian Church in 1947 because of doctrinal differences and established the Christian Chapel.

  • 1966:  The Byrds release the single for "5D (Fifth Dimension)"

Quote:

"5D (Fifth Dimension)" is a song by the American rock band The Byrds, written by band member Jim McGuinn. It was released as a single on June 13, 1966 and reached #44 on the Billboard Hot 100 but failed to chart in the United Kingdom. The song was also included on the band's third album, Fifth Dimension, released on July 18, 1966. "5D (Fifth Dimension)" followed the release of the band's influential "Eight Miles High" single and arguably took The Byrds' psychedelic experimentation to even further extremes than their previous single had.

According to McGuinn, the song's lyrics were an attempt to explain Einstein's theory of relativity and were directly inspired by the book 1-2-3-4, More, More, More, More by Don Landis. In a 1966 interview with Hit Parader magazine the guitarist stated "It's sort of weird but...what I'm talking about is the whole universe, the fifth dimension, which is height, width, depth, time and something else. But there definitely are more dimensions than five. It's infinite. The fifth dimension is the threshold of scientific knowledge." Talking to Michael Ross of Creem magazine in 1970, McGuinn further explained the song's meaning: "'5D' was an ethereal trip into metaphysics, into an almost Moslem submission to an Allah, an almighty spirit, free-floating, the fifth dimension being the 'mesh' which Einstein theorized about. He proved theoretically - but I choose to believe it."

The song's abstract lyrics were largely interpreted by the band's audience as being about an LSD trip, much to McGuinn's dismay. The notion that the song was about drugs was given further credence when it was singled out, within a month of its release, by Variety magazine as one of a recent spate of pop songs containing references to illegal drug use. As a result of these allegations, the song was banned by some radio stations in the U.S.

The master recording of "5D (Fifth Dimension)" was taped on May 24 and 25, 1966, during sessions for the Fifth Dimension album, with Allen Stanton serving as producer.[9] The song features the Bach-influenced organ and electric piano playing of Los Angeles composer, arranger, producer, and session musician Van Dyke Parks. "5D (Fifth Dimension)" was a favorite of The Byrds' bass player, Chris Hillman, who described it as "one of the greatest songs McGuinn has ever written."

Following its release, the song was performed sporadically during The Byrds' 1966 live concerts but was abandoned for the rest of the group's lifespan. However, the song is frequently performed by McGuinn during his solo concerts and consequently appears on his 2007 live album, Live From Spain. In addition to its appearance on the Fifth Dimension album, "5D (Fifth Dimension)" also appears on several Byrds' compilations, including The Byrds' Greatest Hits, History of The Byrds, The Original Singles: 1965–1967, Volume 1, The Byrds, The Very Best of The Byrds, The Essential Byrds, and There Is a Season.

  • 1969:  Pink Floyd release the soundtrack from the film More

Quote:

Soundtrack from the Film More (US original title: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack from the film More) is the first full-length soundtrack album, and third studio album by the English rock band Pink Floyd, released on 13 June 1969 in the UK and 9 August in the US.  The film More was made in Luxembourg in 1969 and was directed by Barbet Schroeder. Two songs can be heard in the film that were not included on the album: "Seabirds" and "Hollywood".
The original American edition shortened the title to just More. This was the last of three Pink Floyd albums to be released in the U.S. by the Tower Records division of Capitol Records. The U.S. 1973 re-issue was released on Harvest Records. Although the CD edition restores the original UK title in all countries, it is represented differently on the spine (Music from the Film More) and label (Soundtrack to the Film More).

More contains some acoustic folk ballads, a genre that appeared sparsely on later works. It also contains a couple of hard rock songs ("The Nile Song", "Ibiza Bar"), as well as several instrumental tracks, featuring their experimental (or avant-garde) approach.

This is Pink Floyd's first full album without founding member Syd Barrett, who was ousted from the group in early 1968 during the recording of their previous album, A Saucerful of Secrets. It is also the first album to be produced by Pink Floyd without assistance from Norman Smith and was recorded at Pye Studios, Marble Arch, London and engineered by Brian Humphries

Soundtrack from the Film More reached #9 in the UK and—upon re-release in 1973—#153 in the US. In 1987, the album was re-released on CD. A digitally remastered CD was released in 1995 in the UK and 1996 in the US.
