If you could speak/read/write 16 languages fluently, which would they be?
    #14604386 - 06/13/11 02:50 AM (12 years, 7 months ago)

If you could speak/read/write 16 languages fluently, which would they be?

You'd be fluent to the point of reading high brow literature, telling jokes successfully and understanding most local dialects of that language.

If 16 is too much, limit it to the ones you'd like most.

Spanish,French, Japanese, Hindi, Latin, Greek, Native American/Inuit, Dutch, Italian, and then basically enough to get by in Africa. I didn't list anything specific about africa because there's like 3,000 languages. They fall into 6 families though so I figure they must have similarities with other languages in that family.

What about you Wiccan Seeker, you didn't provide a list.

Old English is pretty easy once you understand structure.

Could always work backwards and try Middle English but that might just end up biting you.

Encore! En Francais pour les Francophones:

I only speak english and some french, if I was going to put effort into learning another full language I would go with Japanese. And with the time it would take to learn 13 other languages I would spend doing japanese type stuff :ninja:

Latin, Sanskrit, Greek, Mandarin, Russian, Icelandic, Dutch, Creole, Afrikaans, German, Arab, oh boy... if I could I'd like to know any language that exists/has existed

Hehehe Portuguese can be really tough for a Germanic language native speaker, the phonetic is very different and we have some grammatical signs most English speakers have difficulty pronouncing such as "ão" for example, sounds like aum but its very nasal.

What do you know of Portuguese?

What do you know of Portuguese?

I know a few phrases and words, not much really. But I used to play an online game that had alot of players from Brazil. I made friends with some of them and would sit there for hours watching them converse in Portuguese and eventually I retained some of it. But now it has been so long since I've used it that I've forgotten most of what I did learn. I know some pronouns and random other words like "irmao, irma, sobrinho/a, obrigado/a, bom noite, beijo, etc." If you put together a simple sentence I can probably decipher most of it.

I also took Spanish in high school but I don't remember all that much of it either. But I think it helps that I have that background because it was really easy for me to pick up the Portuguese.

Also what is with Portuguese-speaking people hating on Spanish? Nearly everyone I talked to got pissed when I compared it to Spanish

One dirty phrase that I was taught that I will never forget: "Eu quero que seu caralho me foda."

I don't know how grammatically accurate it is but hey

:laugh2: that's brazilian portuguese for literally "I want your cock to fuck me" lol

I like Spanish people, the thing is, our country is really small and there are a lot of uninformed foreigners who think that Portugal is a province from Spain, apart from that I don't really understand what's up with that.

Yeah, if you studied Spanish it should be easier for you to learn Portuguese because grammatically they're similar.

Zuid Afrika gaan helaas.

^^ No this is not German. We got liberated so it's still considered Dutch.

16 may sound like a lot but it isn't really.
Once you get going it gets easier to learn more languages. The second one is often the hardest. Then once you learn the third and the fourth the fifth is a piece of cake. Once you start learning number 6 its like you don't really have to make an effort anymore. And it just keeps on getting easier after that...
Of course there are some difference depending on different alphabets or characters you might need to learn or new types of pronunciation you might need to master that require more time.

Well, as you learn a second language you will automatically become more proficient in your native language.

It takes a little bit of discipline but above all a willingness to learn:

yea I know I was JK about not being fluent in english

I took 4 years of spanish in high school, but I cheated my way through spanish 3, so by the time I got to my 4th year I was so lost.

I wanted to get rosetta stone, or something similar because I still remember quite a bit of spanish...

Latin, Spanish, German, and Hebrew. Then I'd make my own insane language.

this didn't happen to me. I actually find myself sometimes thinking about things I'd like to express in Portuguese and mentally the first that comes to my mind is in English. I've had English since I was 10 and always understood it easily  sometimes it bugs me that I haven't got the oportunity to speak it more often and am afraid of forgeting somethings, the shroomery is a great way to train my writing though

I have a friend that is fluent in 7 languages. And when I say fluent I really mean fluent. I'm going to put in some work and get there sometime as well. 7 sounds like a good number to end up at.
