Ok, so I have been lurking on the site now for quite some time doing as much research as I can. and finally decided to go out today (not my first time). Me and a good friend of mine decided to walk through a local cow field as expected we found plenty of garbage mushrooms, but one kind growing in dung in a shaded area caught my attention. At this point it is very very small, but growing in very dark so it gets me to thinking that the spores may end up jet black. I'll post pics as soon as they are big enough to get any info out of. Really what I want to know if someone could give me a heads up to stake my claim or move on? General info: Area, cow field found under trees in shade When "smooshed" for lack of a better term they stain your hand black dead/decaying wood near by close to a small stream weather has been between 80-90 100% humidity and warm rain. If anyone can point me in the direction of what the "baby" mushrooms in my PA area look like I'd be glad to take a look (yes I have read the shrooms that grow in my area section)
Thanks in advance for any info hope I didn't piss anyone off Zacchaeous

i don't think anyone is going to tell you what 'baby' mushrooms look like, but if you found other species of fully mature fruits, just wait for these to fruit and post some pictures, from your description i just picture a crap covered/muddy dark corner of some farm that you saw some black blobs from 100 feet away, but keep looking and take some pictures if you can

Right, that's exactly what I didn't want to do. Also clearly just because the spores my be black doesn't mean I'm going to go rush out and eat a hand full of mushrooms. On average how long does a mushroom take to grow to the point of identification? because these lil guys are prob no more than a day or so old. Also I must say I'm quite surprised at how nice, and fast the responses are

From what I know they just let it go, not saying they wouldn't scoop it up for fertilizer. But I'm going on another shrooming trip today, and just wanted to know if it was ok to get some quality pics just for some general ids (I just would like to know what I'm coming across). Is it ok to post them in this thread or should I open a new one (I really like this community and I really don't wanna piss a mod off )

It'd be just as easy to use this thread. Also, if you don't know how to post pictures on shroomery,

Zach the orange mushroom growing from hardwood is a good edible -- it's either Laetiporus sulphureus or Laetiporus cincinnatus depending on the color of the pore surface (cincinnatus will have white pores, sulphureus will have yellow pores).

5 and 6 are an amanita, they have free white gills and patches of various types of veil material on the cap. When you post an amanita, dig up the base intact and take a picture of that too, it will help in the identification.

I don't think edible is the proper term, they are not like psylocybin(sp?) mushrooms, but are psychoactive in a more disassociative way, can be very toxic.

See, that's what I figured, so really it's more of a look but don't eat kinda thing, or is it "safe" (clearly you saying its toxic it can't be safe) in small doses? I just don't want to eat what is going to kill me and or pick what I can't use. I guess what I'm trying to say is toss it or not?

If you know what you are doing, get the preperation and dose right it can be "safe" to some degree.
Personally, I don't mess with the things, never have, don't intend on it. It doesn't sound like all that fun, and those that take it more than once seem to have a more "shamanistic" attitude towards them rather than recreation.
I could be totally wrong here, but I believe some parts of the mushroom are more toxic than others, I think the outside of the cap is exposed to high heat (like an oven) leaving psychoactive alkaloids (muscarine possibly?) and destroying toxins. Please don't go by my word, if you are interested I would check out erowid's info on them edit- here is some quick info I snagged from erowid
Quote:
Psychoactive Amanitas are mushrooms which contain the psychoactive chemicals ibotenic acid and muscimol. They have a long history of use in Asia and Northern Europe. They are best known for their distinctive appearance (bright reds and yellows with white spots).
There are many species of mushrooms in the Amanita genus which are not psychoactive. Some are deadly poisonous while others are edible.

I totally know what you are saying, and I'm glad to hear this
Still, these are nothing to be taken lightly, I just want to make sure you are informed about what you are getting into. Read some of the experience reports at erowid, use the categories to check out both good and bad experiences. Make sure you are fully prepared physically and mentally, we are not really taught in our culture how to approach things like this. Exploring the depths of the mind and soul has lead many into some very dark places, drugs like this are neither for the foolhardy or the faint of heart.
Animatas are beautiful mushrooms, I would consider myself lucky to find one!

Then by all means, don't eat it
Though people at the shroomery do their best to make good IDs, and if someone can make an ID with absolute certainty they usually will, but you should know enough yourself to be sure yourself if you were to ever eat anything you picked, especially when dealing with Animata, as many of this family will kill you.
Do not go and give yourself a false sense of confidence after reading a few posts at the shroomery, I have been at this for years and I still have trouble

Ya I saw it ans was like wow holy hell an Amanita on the way back to the car no friggn' way! But they have reports for the Red buggers only not my yellow guy and I dont think its a death cap or Destroying Angel either its for sure not white, but that doesn't mean I wont get hurt, unless all "flys" have the same compounds ? But I love learning about myself tripping I find it a great escape and always come back with something relevant. But if you know of any info on the Amanita muscaria var. formosa that is what I believe I found Let me know Because if I won't die I'm excited to see where this cap may take me! (I hope not to an early grave) And right as of now I'm treating it as a poison

As far as I know, A. muscaria and A. pantherina and their variations, are the only ones that carry Ibotenic Acid and Muscimol, and between the two, I hear, A. pantherina contains more of them. I'm not sure what those are, but they don't really look like either to me. If you want to try out A. muscaria, make sure to find out what variations grow in your area. The ones in Europe tend to be red with white veil remnants. I think in North America on the east coast, there's color variations, yellow, orange etc, just look in woods (I prefer coniferous, but I hear they grow in deciduous as well). Many people don't like the trip. I do. I think it's about preparation and finding out your ideal dose. And some stuff just isn't for everyone. Finding other actives might be your better bet, but if in your travels, you learn to ID A. muscaria, you can give them a try. You usually can't fart in the woods without hitting half a dozen. Good luck!

You couldn't tell anymore, demons and man were related, and some would say the same, but who would like to claim? In time, Gods had even forgot, Demons, too, once love had sought. In times recent I remember, Once I was a man, In my heart I had an ember, I'll relate the best I can but it was snuffed, one distant December. And yet here I stand, no flesh, no bones, no seed or semen, All that's left is this Demon.

Amanita is the genus, it encompasses many species, some are deadly poisonous, some are edible, some are innocuous, and some it isn't known if they are toxic or not. I can't see the base of your mushroom, so I'm not sure what it is. Toadstool is a colloquial term for mushrooms with no set meaning, saying an amanita is a toadstool doesn't tell you anything about them unless you define what you mean by toadstool.
