Interesting finds from 3000 feet in Old Cascades
    #14603454 - 06/12/11 10:24 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Found chanterelles and hedgehogs that must be from last fall. Small in size and definitely aged...from an area that has just been freed from snow. They must have been preserved over winter. This is the latest spring in Oregon in i'd guess 50-100 years. Also found very beautiful specimens of Guepiniopsis alpinus.

they must be from this spring. both mushrooms are spring/winter finds. The chanterelles that you found are chantharellus infundibuliformis or winter chanterelle. Good find by the way :thumbup:. Those hedgehogs are very good with a cream sauce over pasta.

I don't think so bro. This area JUST thawed. They were tiny and were not fresh by any means. I could be wrong but...

good call on the species though! Thank you

I would say he's more likely right. I always find hedgehogs into the spring.

Hedgehogs are delicious, I like them much better than chants. They're just more fragile a lot of the time.

I believe it's possible they might have spent the winter in the "freezer".

Had a treestump not far from my house last fall which was full of
Gyms (not active where I'm at), and they were all of a sudden covered
from a massive snowfall which lasted about a month. Snow then
disappeared, and although shrunken and slightly deformed, the Gyms
were still there. After that freeze it was mild for a while, but they were
there on that stump decomposing for at least three weeks.

Yup, it happens, i've seen it before. I'm positive this was the case. These were not spring mushrooms. Everything i've read indicates that both of these species are late fall/early winter fruits.
