Bran
    #14603435 - 06/12/11 10:19 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Im doing shiitake using Sawdust, and was wondering is it a absolute must that one need to add bran?

By adding, isn't one increasing the contamination rate? Similarly, the mycelium will colonize faster?

So, in a all American pressure cooker, is 30mins enough sterilization with bran added? Or do i have to increase the timing further? For i read that endosopres thrives in bran. For without Bran, just sawdust and CS, 30mins has worked fine with me without contamination.

You are on the money.

Bran adds nitrogen, making the substrate nutrient rich and great for growing (mycelium or moulds).

If you add bran (or other nitrogen supplements) you HAVE to sterilise your substrate.  Which, depending on the size of your bag/container tends to take a minimum of 90 minutes.  If you have a large bag, then 2 hours+.

There is debate (old school vs new school) about the rate of supplementation.  At the minute I'd suggest you supplement at a ratio of 1:20, then add grain spawn at 1:20 (giving you 10:1 supplement total)  Yes, it aids in colonisation, but if it's all used up prior to fruiting then it won't cause mutants.

Maybe add some bark or a little straw to your substrate, say 20-25%.
