Glad plastic food containers 1

So I was searching through the archives, and came across a member that successfully used glad mini round half pint containers in replacement for mason jars. He was even able to PC the containers at 15 psi for 45+ minutes. I was wondering what your guys opinions are on using glad containers to replace the standard mason jars? The poster only used 1/4 and 1/2 pint containers, has anyone used quart sized glad containers successfully? Also I was thinking that by putting a piece of tyvek under the cap would decrease the chance of contams especially with larger sized containers. I'm very interested in this because I feel using plastic would be so much more convenient than mason jars, also transferring seems like it would be much easier. I have grain ready for tomorrow and if its worth a try, I have LC ready to go and would love to try it out asap. So let me know what you guys think/know about plastic containers for grain spawn, thanks.

dude! i use 1/4 pint plastic glad jars for my brf cakes EVERY TIME! i truly am in love with them! sometimes, when i'm feelin froggy, i even stack'em. 1/2 pint cakes in 1/2 the time.
ok, firstly, their lids are super easy to mod, just be sure to put the noc port in the "valley" close to the edge, not in the middle (you'll see it when you look at the lids in person). RTV silicon sticks to them no problem, even through the dishwasher. i mean, replace it when need be, but you dont have to till then.
i use tyvek filters covered in BandAids, gotta be the super duper fabric kind though, and waterproof. just cut a square that will cover the GE hole, then stick it down with the sticky side of the bandaid. 1 bandaid = 2 sticky sides. put that shit in the middle.
and you only need one noc port cuz you can twist the lid as you noc! okay, 4 noc sites, so stick it in, squirt out 1/4cc, withdraw the needle but not all the way, twist the lid 1/4 turn, stick the needle in all the way, squirt in 1/4cc, REPEAT!
an extra layer of tyvek would help, i GUESS.....but its not necessary.
i'm STOKED that someone else is looking into this!
yes, i use 1/4 pint mason jars, and yes they are fine, but normally, i just use these. they are super cheap, pick up 3 packs of 8 (i think), some RTV silicon, some bandaids, and some tyvek and TADA, you got some of the BEST little jars on earth!
i dont know about the bigger jars though. if those get contamed, its kinda a big deal, but with the little ones, who cares?! don't know about grains either. sorry i can't be of more help there. my same 16 jars have gone through 4 generations of cakes, and no faults. no warping, bending, cracking, etc.
JUST MAKE SURE that that have a "4" on the bottom, like in the "triangle, recycle" thing...something about the kind of plastic they are made of....4 survives the pc, other dont, i guess.

I think micropore tape would work better for you then a band aid fyi. That's what most recommend for covering innoc holes. Its cool that you have used them with no problems, now i just need to find out if I could do grain and quart size...But given the amount of time brf cakes take to colonize completely it seems that some lc and a quart of grain could be feasible...Any one else?

So I'm headed to walmart after work to pick up some glad containers, and I'm still looking for an opinion on using glad containers for grain in quart size. I know that many people have successfully done brf cakes, which gives me hope. Especially since brf half pints take longer to colonize then a quart of grain innoced with lc. I seriously think if it works it will be so much more convenient to use plastic square dished instead of bulky glass mason jars...

I'm sure it would be possible to use them for grain, but you wouldn't be able to shake 'em. As soon as you banged the container against anything, the top would pop off.
I too have used them for cakes, and found them effective. Just make sure you don't get the ones that have a section that comes up in the middle, it creates an annoying air pocket, that makes it easier to disturb the verm layer.

So I went out and got these for 2.50 http://www.buythecase.net/product/12234/ziploc_twist_n_lock_medium_round_containers_32_oz/ They have screw on caps. my question is, along with micropore tape over innoc holes do you think I should screw a peice of tyvek on under the lid? Or will micropore and a coffee filter over top be fine? I'm excited for this 2 work they are same size as mason jars but lighter less bulky, plastic and slowly taper out so top is the biggest so easier to transfer even more so then wide mouth jars.

You don't want tyvek under the lid, if it gets wet it will wick contaminates through it. Coffee filters aren't worth anything, they're for filtering large particles, not the size you're trying to keep out.
Make sure the symbol on the container looks like this:
 Otherwise they will melt.

Yep made sure that it was the 5 pp. Also I figured i shouldn't use tyvek when it wouldn't allow the top to screw haha. I don't know about tyvek and getting wet and contaminated tho...I know it is used on houses as weather proofing and has siding and other things build over it. This is why I don't believe even when wet that it is prone to contams...I could be wrong and I apologize, it does not seem like the ideal material and surface for any thing to live on...I would even think the metal on bottom of mason jar lids is more prone that tyvek...

I believe I heard it from the full version of RR's Let's Grow Mushrooms videos, but I could be mistaken.

Whether it is prone to contams or not, I'm sure it will be worst then having just the plastic top, I know for a fact plastic isn't prone to contams...And I didn't want the tyvek to keep contams out necessarily, I wanted it to keep the moisture in. I'm guessing that even tho the containers are spill proof and probably wont lose too much moisture, I think moisture will be my biggest problem if anything. So all in all I cant use it because of how the tops are made and second I might as well not take the risk.

Yeah, your best bet is probably filter disks. You can also use polyfill if you'd like to go cheaper.

I use 5x5x5 zip-loc containers to do my grains they fit perfect in my 6 qt pc. I drilled 5 1/4" holes in the lids. One in each corner and one in the center. The center hole gets siliconed over for innoc. and I run silicone around the edges of the top and around all the holes, then I lay tyvek over that so the silicone glues down the tyvek. Let it set for 24 hrs and its ready to go. Fill with your fave grains or other substrate and fill er' up. I then duct tape around the edges and now I can shake it all I want without worry and the sides are soft enough where if you need to give it a squeeze then go ahead.

Well I just drilled a 1/8 size hole in the top and micropore taped over it. See I used the ziplock rounds which have leak proof screw on tops, so I didn't have to go to extremes. I was able to shake my grain around no problem and after the innoc, I just put another piece of micropore on and then covered it with a coffee filter...Probably wont do anything but it makes me feel better about it haha. So hopefully my year and a half old LC works, I guess we will find out.

Thanx for the props couldn't have done it with out the fine folks on here. Have found an extreme wealth of knowledge and with a little searching and some ingenuity (and some trial and error of course) I have been able to have great success with my limited resources.

Forget about coffee filters they are completely useless. If you need to cover them cut a large piece of tyvek and hold it down with a rubber-band.
