FC idea..
    #14601713 - 06/12/11 03:55 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I want to make a fc with standing water filling the bottom, and floating trays on the water, or suspending them inches above if the
tray needs have drainage.

The trays will have lids drilled with holes, and in and out fresh air tubes to the outside of the tub,
with a small handheld fan blowing in one tube from the outside. This should cause the trays to pull in the moist air from
the tub so there will be constant humidity, all while keeping constant, but mild, FAE.
The tub will be sitting on a heating pad set to 90 and I will run a small fishing aerator.

Also, a white led will be set on the underside of the tub lid.

Whatya think? It's a really easy build, I have all the stuff on hand.
Just wanna know if it's worth putting it together.

Thanks for reading, all feedback is welcome =]

Standing water has very little surface area and won't come close to giving the correct humidity if you're also giving the proper amount of fresh air.  That's why we use damp perlite with no standing water in terrariums.

I think it'd be a fun project that would take some tweaking.  But contamination may be a problem.  Maybe squirt some H202 in the resevoir to help prevent contams.

Why not just use a proper SGFC,the 4 inches of moist perlite in the bottom will create more humidity than standing water plus its just simple.

perhaps you can build it like an SGFC but only put like 5 holes in the bottom more water will pool (IME) in the bottom only problem there is it gets whatever is under it wet because it still drains some but I thought about that too and thought why not have a really shallow (1/4 in depth) baking pan under to catch water and evaporate it into the area that way too and my thoughts on this suggest that the perlite will act as a bit of a "filter" effect. This is just a theory...

Less holes means less air flow through the moist perlite which will reduce evaporation causing a drop in humidity

Why? There will be lots of FAE.

That's the thing, I will be able to deliver fresh air without ever opening the tub. The tub will have absoutely no air holes, except for the in and out tubes coming from the floating tray to the outside of the tub(air flows directly into trays from one direction, and out in the other). This will pull the moist air into the trays and give constant FAE.

Oh and the aerator will increase surface area a little via bubbles.

I was thinking 20/1 water/H2O2?

Go ahead and try it but its not ideal and its way more complicated than it has to be.Whats your goal here anyway?

If you enjoy failing, then this would be fun.
You could tweak it extensively and still enjoy sustained failure.

To have constant FAE and high humidity. And to have floating mushrooms

Well then stop talking and do it.
You asked for advice and you got advice.
Take that advice or don't, but don't try to argue without trying it.

I'm with you, man. It does sound cool.

But I think humidity is going to be your problem. How is it going to pull the air from the tub if the air is being constantly forced into it from outside the tub? The outside air will just continuously push the humid air away right? Unless I'm missing something...

EVERYTHING is worth a shot, as long as you have something else going.

i mean, if you have a shoutgun or tub working already and your getting bored, and you have the shit to do it, then by all means, do it!

i think it sounds like a swell idea; swell as in "great", or "to inflate due to infection and pus."

Hey good luck mate, i was thinking of using one of these plant cuttings unit as i already own one :jah:.And making a air filter box for the air pump and filters for the top vents. With H2O2 in the water too.Im thinking with filters at the top and possibly a bigger air pump should increase humidity as it produces 70-80% with open vents.

"the air pump continuously pumps through a supply of fresh air into the water, past the cutting leaves, and out the gaps in the lids. This is happening 24hrs a day in comparison to normal humidity tents where the lid is left on and the same air is trapped there for hours  at a time. The air that passes by the leaves has just bubbled through the warm water at a measured level (100ltr per hour) in relation to the gap area, firstly giving the air a high level of humidity that is essential to healthy plant cuttings (70-80%) cutting out the need to mist the leaves."
