Taking Hunting out of the Equation!
    #14602128 - 06/12/11 05:25 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Today I built a garden for growing wild active mushrooms and for corn. I figure the corn will be a perfect way to shade and hide the mushrooms as long as the corn doesn't mind the horse poo. This poo came from the bottom of a huge pile that my friend was spreading in his field. It's pretty well decomposed so who knows what might grow out of it right. Here is what it looks like:

Everyone's advice will be appreciated!

What kind of actives do you expect to grow?

nice one! I recommend that you water it often and with some luck and a little warmer weather you might have some panaeolus cinctulus :mushroom2: If you can get your hands on some panaeolus cinctulus spores it couldn't hurt to put them in there with the poo.

The standard type to grow in the PNW would be the woodlovers like P. cyanescens, which are easy to grow and potent. Good luck with what you're trying to do, let us know if it works.

If I where to buy spores, what species would be my best bet for my application, where is the best place to buy from that would have my local species and how should I apply them to my garden?

Taking the hunting out of the equation is like taking 90% of the fun out of mushrooms.
And yeah, in the PNW I'd go for woodchip beds instead of horse manure and grow some potent actives.

A common and very potent species native to the PNW is Psilocybe cyanescens. I'm not sure if any of the sponsors sell P. cyanescens spores, but you could look. I'd expect them to possibly be more expensive than cubensis. Or check the marketplace.

That said, if you're on the wet side of the PNW, you should be able to find your local species in the fall and obtain spores from those. It's simpler still to generate mycelium from stem butts and pins. In Seattle I can say that P. cyanescens are widely distributed. My understanding is that there are a number of similar woodlovers that are cousins in the P. cyanescens family. See P. azurescens, for example.

Go over to the cult forum or check the main site for information on making a woodchip bed for woodlovers. The general procedure is: colonize a relatively small amount of a spawn material, such as woodchips, and from that make a bed outdoors by mixing the colonized spawn with a larger amount of prepared woodchips and sawdust.
