If I am steam sterilizing and only have packing tape should I cover the inoc holes with the tape while steaming then take it off after AS WELL as cover in foil during steaming...or just cover in foil?

Say what?! haha I can't udnerstand your question.
But 1) Flip the rubber seal over 2) tape over holes 3) put lid on and foil on top 4) put them in the pot 5) steam 6) leave them in there for at least 1 hour 7) turn off the stove after a hour and leave them in there for atleast 2 hours 8) take them out and let them cool for 8+ hours or you can just leave them in the pot overnight 9) Inoculate 10) re tape it. It's optional. I don't 11) Hope your syring is good and your verm barrier works! (:
Good luck man I'm still in m first grow.no contams at all.

Dont use packing tape. IF your going to use tape for your holes, use micro-pore tape. And always cover with foil while your steaming or pc'n your jars.

Yeah tape is an extra protection. I used medical tape aka micro pore tape from the local pharmacy. But I've heard packing tape works too. Just flip the jelly lids so it can have GE

Dont use packing tape. You dont need tape at all if you have a dry verm layer. And there is no need to flip your lid if you have holes in your lids.

10) re tape it. It's optional. I don't
I'm a taper, but it's certainly optional. Use micropore tape, not packing tape. (It would be ok to use paper tape under the foil, then shoot through it and leave it in place if you wanted.)

Thank you for all your answers, my question with a bit more clarity I suppose is... Does it matter if my holes aren't taped as long as I have foil over the top during the steaming?* I know I shouldn't just leave the tape on the holes after inoculation since it needs air exchange.
These were going to be my steps.
1) Filled jar with verm + brf and 3/4-1 inch dry verm layer on top. Wiped edges clean as well. 2) Put packing tape over the holes and foil or just foil on top with no tape on the holes since I do not have micropore or masking tape. *(Deciding this based on answers to my question above.) 3) Sterlize for 1hr30min let cool for 4-8 then inoculate. 4)Remove the packing tape if I put it on at all and put the 3 cake jars in my grow room in a small plastic container with no lid on a top shelf that has a 64k spectrum 125w cfl running around 8-10k lumens. I figured the indirect light from that would be good and it stays a fairly humid comfortable 80 degrees with 50% humidity.
Does anyone see where I was going with the tape? Or am I just crazy?
Thanks for any more support!

If you snug the foil down smoothly and the jars are elevated, no need for tape during boiling.

My concern was moisture escaping the holes but I guess it doesn't matter much since micropore and masking tape let it out as well. Thank you.

Moisture escaping into a pot full of pressurized steam?
You may be overthinking things a bit.

yeah the worry when steaming is over saturation or not elevating them and thus burning the bottoms

I have the jars on 1 extra band each and a medium sized layer of foil.
No water is touching the sides much but splashes on the bottom are going on. Simmering on low heat with a tight lid pot lots of steam though. 20 mins into steaming so far and am hoping this cambodia strain turns out well. Can't wait to knock them up.

you will have to add some water at some point for you should be steaming right around 60-90 min, so I would recommend putting some water on the boil next to it to pour in after some reduction make sure its hot or you'll end up with a need for new jars. splashing happens but if its too much/rapid turn you're heat down you aren't boiling your jars you're steaming them. Be sure to let em cool overnight in the pot (at least 8 hours) if you leave em in the pot the pot is sterile-ish and less risk of contams or cross contamination.

don't worry about the water touching the sides, smooth the foil around the sides. I usually put my water 3/4 of the way up the jar and have for years
