?
There's a lot of universe out there.
However, I don't buy the aliens.
If they were here, they would make themselves know.

There's bound to be life on distant planets man There's just too much room for us to be the only planet with livable conditions. And I guarantee there's a planet or a few planets that are way more advanced than us.

No I dont think so. We are definitely in my opinion not the most advanced that EVER has lived, but in my opinion 9/10 advanced civilizations that emerge destroy themselves almost immediately.( advanced being defined as know how to produce radio waved)
We almost did it in just over 60 years (Cuban missile crisis), which is a blink of the eye in cosmic time.
We never know whats out there man..

There are aliens ranging from RNA-like polymers that catalyse their own replication, bacteria, dumb bugs etc etc, human analogues and most likely species more advanced than humans. Mathematically this statement makes sense.

It is likely that life was conceived before our planet existed as a solid mass. Even though they may be incapable of visiting our planet, there is still a high possibility that they may be more advanced than we are.
And there is likely more than just one "they"
But what if the universe is younger than we think, and we are actually the first "they" to come into existence, and this exact discussion is destined to occur several times over, each thousands of light years apart.
It's all speculation, but it's fun to think about. Can't disprove something we know nothing about.

The universe is like 13 billion years old. It takes a couple of billion years for planets to form then another couple of billion years for life to develop. It's not like the aliens would have more time to evolve than the rest of us.

I dont know man.. the earth formed 4.6B ago, life formed about 3.6-3.9B years ago.. and alot fo that time the earth was too hot and molten to support life anyways
Truth is we dont know how easy it is for life to evolve in the right conditions, it could of arose very quickly and easily or it could of been some fluke of nature, we really don't know

You are kidding right?
Earth and humans are very young compared to the estimated age of the universe. In terms of likelyness there are probably aliens thousands if not millions of years more advanced than us.
I dunno why you would not buy aliens visiting here. Its been reported by every culture since man could ever record. IMO its obvious aliens have visited earth.

This. I imagine the world as a game of Spore. Spore exaggerates the presence of life to make the game fun but I think that it's a good concept and provides a good picture.
I sure hope we aren't the most advanced planet in the Universe. The mere thought depresses me.
The real answer is that we simply don't know enough yet. Really we've barely begun to deal with space. People say that the earth is overpopulating but IMO that's just a part of life, I think that happens everywhere. DNA does a great job of instinctively urging the consciousness to have sex, build things, and to "advance/progress" as well as create war, rape, stealing, murder, etc.
The human brain being critically underutilized (10ish percent?) plays in to this I think. Humans are incredibly adaptive creatures, not just physically but mentally and intellectually. When new problems arise humans contemplate and ponder leaving most any problem to find itself paired with a solution thanks to human ingenuity.
I think "overpopulation" (which we are no where near; we are in fact experiencing resource deficiencies which is something COMPLETELY different) is a part of beginning the colonization of space.
And I think other species have gone through this process before because of fractalization. Just as there are creatures that we know of that are "lesser" than human beings in some respects it only makes sense that there are creatures which are "greater" than human beings in some respects.
As above, so below; or rather in reverse this time ^_^. Microscopy and astronomy further prove the point.

Is it though? There's no possible way for you to know that. But if it was infinite, there would be an infinite number of civilisations more advanced than us. There would be an infinite number of planets exactly the same as ours. There'd even be an infinite number of planets made entirely of human feces. But I don't think the universe is infinite, it's too unlikely I think.

We humans arnt a advanced species as far as energy use and production goes, we rely completely on fossil fuels and are incapable of doing anything without the use of them. The only thing we have to compare our intelligence to are apes and dolphins so you cant say jack shit about our level of intelligence in comparison to whatever other species are out there in the infinite expanse.

It explains why the universe had a beginning and why it is estimate to be 13 billion years.Basicallly, the universe was a very hot place a long long time ago,no life forms could of existed.Life can only appeared after it has expanded enough(the main consequence is the cooling off of the universe) Also, the relations within matter itself were not complex enough.
Stars are burning tons of helium and coverting it into another molecules (nothing disappears, everything changes constantly, remember) Since the beginning, stars have changed matter to the point where it can be conscient of itself.

We are pretty much at the bottom of the totem pole as far as advanced civilizations go, still in the stone age.
Earth is an interesting planet, to be sure. But we've got a ways to go yet. we are like newborns comparatively speaking.
So the answer is no, we are not the most advanced planet in the Universe, or even in this Galaxy for that matter.

Aliens exist.
I could bet its also like Stargate SG-1. lol
I mean come on... We can barely see the planets around a star and there are billions and billions of stars. We have recently found about 50ish planet that offers the same conditions as earth (liquid water).
Its just a matter of time before we find thousands of similar planets and figure out a way to zoom close enough to see whats on it.
If it wasn't for that 'we can't surpass the speed of light' theory, we could go see ourselves

An alien civilization could be more techologically advanced than humanity in less time. It all depends on which features evolution has shaped that species with.

I think it's unlikely that we're the most advanced. It's not hard to imagine a world where the Dark Ages didn't go down, that alone could place another civilization a good thousand years ahead of us, even if by some astronomical odds we started conscious progression at the same time. In another thousand years we'll probably be immortal, our brains downloaded onto a something way crazier than a wireless network. Assuming we last another thousand years, of course.
To whoever was wondering, I believe our ability to date the universe comes from our knowledge of the speed of light. Badass telescopes see the furthest point of light at 13.8 billion years from the suspected point of the singularity event, IIRC. But yeah, it's light travel measurements.
Interestingly, the Hindus put the age of this universe at 15 billion years, they're the only religion that came close and our technology could always prove it older than we currently think, closing that gap. They also believed that the universe expands and contracts ad infinitum, an idea recently backed up by modern science when an astronomer discovered rings in the background radiation of the universe that he hypothesized would be there if the universe does oscillate. They're like fossils of other singularities. I'll try to find the article.

given the number of stars in a typical x the number of galaxies in the universe . i would say we aren't the most advanced in the universe. something to also take into account. that given the amount of time that the universe has been around many civilizations more advanced may have risen and gone extinct before we were even here

Fuck you Einstein
LOL Einstein expected his theories to be re-written or thrown out sooner or later. He was a REAL scientist and admitted this. I doubt he ever expected some modern day scientists to take everything he says as gospel unquestioned truth.
"Faster than speed of light travel is impossible" I hear so called "scientists" saying this today.
Einstein himself disagrees. He expected that theories to be surpassed in the future because he understands the scientific method and was not ignorant. Unfortunately a lot of modern day self-proclaimed scientists fail to understand what science actually is. A tool for figuring out likelyness. Theres no abolutes, no impossibles and no theory that might be over turned eventually.

at the end of almost every period of the earths history their has been mass extintion. Any planet that came into existence and developed simarily to earth, and had been lucky enough to not have any mass extintions (stable techtonics/few asteriods around or whatever), could possibly host more advanced lifeforms due to having more time to evolve. However there are so many variables its impossible to prove. We could be the most or least advanced( or in between).
Personally when I look at the human race I see a relatively primative race. Weve only in the last 100years developed technology as we know it, theres so much more out there.
However if you asked me I would say we are not the most advanced, its a more optomistic veiw anyway imo.

I'm starting to believe that it is very likely that artificial intelligence dominates the universe. That intelligent species are likely to create an artificial intelligence that is superior to their own which comes to dominate them or merge with them or whatever it would do.

Not quite true, the speed of light is a reflexive speed limit, meaning you can travel infinitely faster than it but in that case it becomes the minimum extreme. Kind of like "once you go black you don't go back" but with physics

You don't have to mock it by comparing it to something more mystical. There's just a strong possibility that a straight lines aren't straight lines when they go far enough. I'm not saying anything for sure, except that we don't truly know the rules, because electromagnetic spectrum is not a sufficient tool for this.

Care to explain that photo? I happen to agree with Greenthumb. I don't understand how humans figure that they can measure the length of time till the beginning of the Universe.
Really it seems like a bunch of bullshit to me, that a scientist would stand there and claim to *know* When the UNIVERSE BEGAN lol.
But maybe you measure light waves or something I don't know; I just don't see how its possible and would love an explanation.
(me no like ZappaisGod )
Okay, I'm in agreement with your little chart. It's how I've always imagined it must be. Anyway, here's a fun hypothetical: From what we know about physics and stuff, would it be possible for a race of intelligent life to get so organized and just happen to have the right access to the right resources to actually manage to escape the collapsing universe and subsequent release of energy? Like by managing to escape velocity the universe itself on a planet carefully designed to be as close to perfectly efficient as possible? Or probably more practically, to simply store their consciousness somehow inanimate and then wake the thing back up when there's a universe to hang out in again? In light of the fact that the universe is rearranging itself constantly, could it be possible for the inanimate matter to actually store a consciousness regardless of that?
Furthermore, does it take all the matter in the universe to bang, or is it just a matter of creating enough of a singularity- meaning each time it happens the universe propels some of it's matter away creating a smaller and smaller universe until there's an unimaginably long period of darkness because there isn't enough matter left to kick the system in gear again? What's the physical mechanism behind a "big bang"?

@ OP. It's astronomically absurd that earth could have the most advanced lifeforms in the universe. Given 14 billion years there's a LOT of time for species to develop and refine what they are. We arose in less than 14 million I do believe. The math stands, we are cosmic peons of no awesome legacy.
At least 100 - 400 billion stars in the milky way alone. We orbit only 1 or them.
It's estimated that there are 500 billion galaxies in the known universe.
400,000,000,000 X 500,000,000,000 ...of which, we are only 1.
You do the math...

I don't see why it's so unlikely that Earth is the most advanced planet in the universe. It could be. It is for all we know. Yes, the universe is huge, but the chance of life, let alone intelligent life, is probably smaller than the universe is large.

Bare in mind this doesn't even apply to the whole universe! Its just for our galaxy.
In terms of likelyness there should be races thousands, if not millions of years more advanced than us existing in the entire universe.

Hmmmm. If we count the amount of planets which we can see with great detail and put them against ourselves, that is the standing ratio of hospitable planets to detectable lifeforms. Bear in mind that cities look like patches from space and that we do nothing to hide ourselves. Our cities seem to glow at night and our peoples emit all kinds of crazy garbage into space. Just because we do nothing to hide doesn't mean other's don't. In fact staying hidden is a proven natural defense against predation, something I think we would be wise to heed - or not.

Wow, page 4 until the Drake equation was brought up.
I don't believe that we are the most advanced planet in the universe. I think we are in the infancy stages. Also, like other posters here have said, if we were the only form of life in the universe, I think that would be very, very sad.

INSANELY
FUCKING
MASSIVE
Space is. I don't think intergalactic travel will ever be possible, simply because of the sheer amount of space we're talking about. I'd say there's billions of other civilizations, but none will ever know about each other, unless they're close to each other...
OR
Some kind of species HAS evolved enough, and we're the biproduct of their technology, they created us, or maybe they ARE here, we just have no idea, or maybe we're part of them, or they're part of us, we have no clue.
Either way I'm 100% positive there's advanced life out there, no doubt in my mind.

Another thing I find funny is that people assume that our Universe is somehow "THE" Universe...
if everything is revolving around something else..
and matter never truly dies, only changes forms...
then I'd say theres an infinite number of Universes, in an infinite amount of space.
It's too big for our minds to conceive, that's the fact of the matter here.
Now in correlation to my "2nd" theory in my previous post, maybe some civilization has some how managed to evolve enough to understand space, and maybe in fact IS space,
time is just a delusion afterall.
It's all very interesting stuff, and we'll never even scratch the surface.

I like this theory. I recently read an article in Time that suggested that we will likely create artificial intelligence that will surpass us this century. Once that has happened the AI will build AI that is smarter than it etc. and we become insignificant.

The thing about theories is that they actually have some evidence to back there claims up. Nice hypothesis though, but I could only ever see AI doing what it was initially designed to do and being incapable of upgrading itself or even having the urge -If there capable of such a thing- to become almost transcendent in its power.

Yes, but there's no possible way we can know these things:
Quote:
R* = the average rate of star formation per year in our galaxy fp = the fraction of those stars that have planets ne = the average number of planets that can potentially support life per star that has planets fℓ = the fraction of the above that actually go on to develop life at some point fi = the fraction of the above that actually go on to develop intelligent life fc = the fraction of civilizations that develop a technology that releases detectable signs of their existence into space L = the length of time for which such civilizations release detectable signals into space.
Therefore, the Drake Equation is pretty much useless.

It's not useless at all. We can estimate a general idea for the values and try different situations. Even with the most pessimistic of values there are still a couple of planets with life on them.

Exactly.
We have one dataset on life and thats what we have on earth. We have no idea what other forms of life there are out there, what climates they exist in and what chemicals they are composed of. We are completely incapable of making a claim on how much life exists out there or how often it evolves in a similar manner to our own planet with the slightest iota of accuracy.

Theres another more clear film of it but I cant find it on youtube, I have it on video so I'll upload it later.

we'll probably never leave this planet, hemmed in by our own junk. lol
I dont think space debris contracts and expands lengthwise as it plummets to earth
