Meteorite Men
    #14601444 - 06/12/11 02:58 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

It's exactly like American Pickers but with meteorites.

Like with American Pickers, I doubt anyone pays THAT much for the stuff they find.

Like, these guys just found a golf ball sized meteorite that landed in Wisconsin and they expect $4,000 from it.  Who pays that?

Science Channel.

It's weird that I have that on Verizon's basic cable.

Who do they sell them to?  I thought selling meteorites was illegal.  I know there is like an underground/black market for them, but I didn't know you could legally sell them.

There's nothing illegal about selling meteorites.

It is illegal to sell parts of the Columbia space shuttle.

Oh, I just read about it.  It is illegal in some places, and there is a problem with people selling stolen ones and shit like that.  I just remember reading something on the news about it a few months ago.

If you take all this time out of your life just to search for meteorites, you should be able to sell them.

I agree you should be able to sell them.  I just remembered a news article talking about the black market for them or something like that, and I guess I just assumed it was illegal.  I remember thinking how retarded that was.

God Discovery Networks sucks a fat dick now. All these shows are retarded. I can kind of tolerate Pawn Stars or American Pickers because at least they talk about some history behind the stuff they find. But now there's a show with Larry the Cable guy, Axe Men, a show about some jack offs looking for meteorites, etc.
What a joke.

I was kinda wondering about that show too.  I guess its a way to make a living, but you got to wonder how many people are out there that are willing to pay that kind of money for space rocks.

I work as a service technician, and I had a call one day to an old guy's home.  He was ether a retired geologist, or just someone with a very extensive hobby.  He was showing me his huge rock and mineral collection in his home, and at the end of the tour he showed me a very large meteorite he has.  It was the size of a football, and no doubt worth a nice chunk of money.  What fascinated me the most about it was the fault lines in the rock that looked like they got fused back together somehow.

I believe he said he found it around Prince Edward Island -he was fairly old and I had a very hard time understanding him speak.

WOW, I guess the few weird rich people want an outer space rock in their possession.  A lot of them have crazy patterns when you cut them open.  It's mostly believed these stones have come from the rocky belt between Mars and Jupiter.

It wasnt a rich weird dude either it was a scientific research group that wanted it.

Pics and put a magnet on it.

That could be worth crazy thousands.

A little low on the camera front right now.

Well it's not magnetic and it's pretty low density. Thought it could be a lava rock, but it's only porous and black on the outside. It's grey on the inside. The pores are also wavy and sharp. There is no flat spot, so it seems to have been heated to a very high temperature briefly while suspended.

Also the outside is sort of like black glass. Too fragile to be a meteorite? What the hell is it then?

if you suspect lava rock, then the black glassy part would be obsidian :strokebeard2:

Mhmm, but the black glass effect is not limited to lava rocks. Also it's thin and perfectly on the outside.

I just can't picture how this thing would form. It was only heated from the outside, seemed to be suspended during the heat and cool process, and doesn't seem strong enough to survive a ground impact.
