stovetop pasteurization w/o thermometer?
    #14600884 - 06/12/11 01:20 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I want to pasteurize some coir/coffee/verm on my stovetop, but I don't have a thermometer to measure temps.  Any ideas on how I can continue to do this, or should I just scrap the coffee part, which seems to be the only reason to stovetop pasteurize rather than just throwing boiling water over straight coir in a bucket and letting it sit?

Get a 5 gallon bucket and look into Damians 50/50 coir Tek you can use additives as you see fit. I would highly recommend getting a meat therm its 4.60 at Smiths.

Throwing boiling water over coir in a bucket is not pasteurization. You definitely need
a thermometer, hold 140-160 CORE temp of sub for 60-90min.

Thanks all for the quick advice.  I'm gonna ditch the coffee grounds and follow Damion5050's coir tek on this attempt.

I recommended a thermometer even priced it (less than 4$ at wal-mart) I didn't say jump in willy-nilly.
