I want to find out whether the extra investment of half pints is worth the time.

It will only cut a wk or so off the time. Last time I did 500ml cakes they took like 5-6 wks. A half pint usually took 4-5 wks for me. I havent grown cakes in years but this is what I remember

I think hes talking about grain? not positive though...
anyways yeah 1/2 pints may be a few days faster, but IMO (if you are talking about grains), I would just work with pints or quarts, much less work.
If youre working with cakes, 1/2 pints are the way to go. Cake 1/2 pints colonize a lot quicker than pints because you cant shake them like grains

Id only use LC for a 500ml cake. Lots of time that i used spores the jar would stall, but i dont think it ever happened with LC

Yea there are issues with using pints for cakes. Learn how to prep grain it totaly brings your grow to a whole new level you need a pressure cooker tho and I dont know how easily obtainable that will be for you

Grain ain't that hard. But read up on moisture content before you try
And you can get and 8qt pc at walmart for 39.99 that'll fit 4 quart jars at a time
Make lids self healing injection ports and gas exchange holes with built in filters, they're very easy to make, and reduce contam risk, there is a tek on the search engine.
Also get tyvek for filtration. Go get some free tyvek envelopes at the post office, works perfect and is 100% autoclavable

fact; everything these guys are saying about pint pf's is not true. Jars stall because something is wrong with them. The cakes are not fragile. It is true that they take 30-40% longer than 1/2 pints. They gat a bad rep., but they don't deserve it

Its never happened to me from LC

My first round of cakes stalled because water content was too high, it's a common problem, I used the standard recipe with verm that was too coarse and thus couldn't hold as much water, I corrected the issue next time around
